Today's most desirable PPC/Smartphone?

There are probably many diverse opinions on this, as I suppose it's
largely a subjective matter. But I'll go ahead and ask anyway. I'm
finally going to replace my ancient iPAQ 2210. I'd love an iPhone but
that's out because I must be able to transfer across my Memory-Map
application for GPS recording.

So what would others recommend please? And, given that I'm now retired
and don't use my (basic) mobile much, is there still any merit in
considering a PPC that is not also a phone?

HTC Touch HD:

Probably not, given the subsidy available from the mobile-phone
companies. HTC Touch HD is available for free on a fairly modest
contract with Orange, but costs £500+ if bought outright.

Re: Today's most desirable PPC/Smartphone?

If you don't need a built-in phone, give a try to the iPAQ hx4700 (with the
WM6.1 upgrade) or the iPAQ 210 (if you can live with the touchscreen
insensitivity of the latter, which certainly plagues at least devices
manufactured before last December). They're excellent devices.

Werner, William: Thanks both, much appreciate your help. I'm veering
towards a phone, and the HTC Touch HD looks impressive. How does it
differ from the HTC Touch 3G here?
http://shop.orange.co.uk/mobile-phon...35!-1866490505

A friend also suggested I look at the Xeria X1. Any comments please?

I'm woefully ignorant on all modern phone technology so please excuse
a couple of very basic follow-up questions.

If I buy from one of these online suppliers, selling at the full
(high!) prices, what do I get in terms of phone and text calls,
internet access, download capacity, etc? Nothing?

Can you buy a 'contract' online too?

Presumably, if I bought from a local UK mobile phone shop, I could get
a choice of contracts? Are products 'tied' to one network, like
Orange, O2, etc?

My current phone is a very basic Nokia 3120, with an Orange
Pay-As-You-Go contract. Can I keep my existing phone number?

If there's an 'Introduction to the UK smartphone scene' anywhere
online, I'd appreciate a pointer please.

---------

If on the other hand I bottle out and go for a non-communicating PPC,
the 4700 looks a likely candidate. But is that series the one I recall
reading about 'yellow-tinted' screen colouring?

And should I worry about a device using WM 6.1 when I gather 6.5 is
due out soon (or has come out?).

The Touch HD has a bigger screen and more memory. Compare the specs
at:

http://www.htc.com/www/product/touch...ification.html
and

Had two of them. Completely useless and unreliable. Fine if you want a
toy. Not at all good if you want a reliable business tool. YMMV.

Can't comment. I prefer to arrange my contracts direct with the
service-provider.

> Can you buy a 'contract' online too?

Yes. Certainly via the main UK providers. Note that only Orange
currently offer the HD as a 'direct' supply.

Depends on the provider. Carphone Warehouse tend to provide unlocked
phones so that they can sell them with a SIM from the service of your
choice.

Yes. This is your legal right, and all providers offer a number-
porting service. You need to request a 'PAC' number. Strangely you may
experience more problems porting your number within the same provider
(i.e moving from Orange PAYG to Ornage Contract). There are ways to
resolve this, though.

Take a look at "Tracey and Matt's Blog" which has lots of reviews and
information:
http://www.tracyandmatt.co.uk/blogs/index.php/c25/

I've also cross-posted this response to uk.telecom.mobile where most
questions can be answered.
