Thanks and being on a PPC right now I couldn't look at all the pages so I have quick question. Is there a new Adobe PDF reader for mobile yet? I need something compatible with version 8. TIA |

Last time I tried it (well over a year ago) it was pretty flakey and crashed trying to openlarge PDFs. Because of the the scrol'ing, I've all but given up on PDFs on WinMo. I convert the ones I need to carry around to Word docs using the free online service at <http://www.pdf-online.com>. You upload your (unprotected!) .pdf and it returns an .rtf with virtually all formatting intact. I then convert that .rtf to .docx in Word to bring the filesize down a bit. (The resulting Word doc is still 5X the size of the original .pdf, however.) |

Thanks Werner. Are you working on a review of Opera Mobile beta 9.7 by any chance? I was wondering if it's worth switching from the best previous 9.5 (Omnia) versions. |

Yesterday when writing my reply, I decided to check wether I have the latest version. Yes I can remember having some crashes too, but that goes for many other WM applications apparently. I was about to give up on WM2003SE, but then I could aswell dispose my mobile device, because there are no updates to be expected. My point was Xpdf crashed on files that Adobe Reader for PPC didn't. Therefore there was little/no advantage to using it over the "real" Adobe product. In addition, installing Adobe Reader for PPC on your PC added a plug-in to Activesync to "tag" PDFs and reformat them for the small screen- unfortunately that process was hit and miss, and only worked for documents you synced from PC to PPC- not for anything you might download directly on the device, or receive as an email attachment. > I was about to give up on WM2003SE, but then I could aswell dispose my > mobile device, because there are no updates to be expected. And I won't > because it was expensive. In many ways, WM2003SE is still the best Windows Mobile OS in terms of speed and memory usage. Very few of its flaws can't be solved with third-party software, and very few native features of newer versions of WinMo can't be added the same way. I've grudingly moved on to WM6, since the hardware features I want are only available on newer devices, but I still have my old WM2003 Dell Axim X5 as a backup. >> You upload your (unprotected!) .pdf and it returns an .rtf with virtually >> all formatting intact. Using a PDF on WinMo is like watching a tennis match! Of course, converting large PDFs to Word is no picnic either- besides the giant file sizes produced eating storage space, the newer versions of Word take AGES to open large Word docs. Some take up to a couple of minutes just to open! For reference PDFs I need to carry around, I convert to Word then break the word docs into smaller more PPC-managable sizes. One 280k doc I opened took about a minute to load. PPC2003, using Pocket word docs, is MUCH faster. |

True- I don't mind WM 5/6- I just didn't like the switch from battery- backed RAM to flash memory for on-device storage. While it's nice that your data survives if the battery runs dead, flash is MUCH slower, so file reads/writes take much longer. My 400MHz WM2003 device is much snappier than my 400MHz WM6 phone. > The only applications on my PPC that run satisfactory are the car navigation > programs. > I have been struggling with e-mail... Yeah, I use QMail in conjunction with the built-in messaging app for email (and for NNTP) and Opera Mini for most browsing, but Opera Mini requires a Java VM, which most WM5/6 phones include, but most WM2003 devices do not. > Then, last but not least: when I tried to implement WM password protection, > it seems I'm not even allowed to make up my own password! That all seems to work OK. It seems conversion (or tagging as it is called) does take a lot of time, but I suppose this is also due to the fact that I have ActiveSync through Bluetooth connection... Apparently there are many different .pdf sub-formats. (a little like the .avi story if you know what I mean). > >> > In many ways, WM2003SE is still the best Windows Mobile OS in terms of >> > speed and memory usage. I have been evaluating QMail some time ago. I had to install a quite old version for WM2003SE. At first sight it looked great, but it seemed unreliable. It often crashed hopelessly, had to reset with resulting data loss. I believe this was when I tried the news reader. Finally I got fed up and removed the app. I havn't tried Opera or other browser alternatives yet. -- regards, |\ /| | \/ |@rk \../ \/os |

That's a "nice" understatement :-)) Life's full of tradeoffs- I charge my devices nightly, so I never had any data losses from flat batteries, and made regular backups just in case. While the flash memory used in WM5/6 solves the dead battery data loss problem, it does it at the expense of speed. So, for me, it "solved" a problem I didn't have while creating a new one. |
