Charger intermittently fails

My iPAQ 2210 is admittedly old, but I'd not have expected its charger
to give trouble. I'll suddenly notice the PPC's display has been
closed. Or get the 'Battery about to expire' warning. I can usually
restart OK by unplugging it from the mains socket and replacing after
a few seconds. Anyone else had similar problem?

Seems inaccessible, so presumably all I can do is buy another?

Re: Charger intermittently fails

judging from the age and symptoms, probably the battery rather than the
charger... at the very least, open the device and get the battery out
before it leaks.

Go to <http://www.bevhoward.com/bhhpj.htm> and search for "Power Tips"

Assuming the ac adapter has this charging tip , replacement power
supplies are common and if you can't find one, radio shack has a "versa
plug"

It's also possible that the multipin connector is shot... if so, it's
probably time for a replacement device... sorry.

Re: Charger intermittently fails

The main or backup battery?
What do you see under Settings, System, Power?
Your main battery probably needs replacing.
Can you also charge using a USB cable?

>> usb charge <<

Not sure if the 2210 had this capability... no ppc (oficially) charged
directly from usb power before this model was introduced although some
third party usb cables (that didn't have to meet usb power specs) were
selling sell.

Some ipaqs of this era charged through the usb cables, but, those cables
had power taps to connect to an ac or dc power supply.

The charger simply stops charging. So no current is being supplied to
either main or backup battery (which feeds off the main battery I
believe). I assume it's a duff component in the wall charger itself.

OK - as I compose this I see that it's happened again. Display off, no
flashing amber LED. OK, I'll remove the wall charger from the mains
socket ... and replace it ... and it's charging the cradle once more.
For all I know, in the morning it will be dead again.

Re: Charger intermittently fails

>> The charger simply stops charging <<

Please pin this down a bit more so we can help... at the moment, we know
that you have a problem and it is intermittent, but not much more.

the actual charger (the ac power supply) or something in between?

One test would be to put a volt meter on the lead from the power supply
to determine if the voltage changes....

Another would be use a different power supply

have you looked at the battery for damage or leaking?

checked for damaged connector pins?

have you done a hard reset?

etc

Well, I don't know how much more explicit I can get than:
Quote: "Display off, no flashing amber LED ... remove the wall charger

cradle once more."

>the actual charger (the ac power supply) or something in between?

If you mean "What is the source of the problem: the actual charger
(the ac power supply) or something in between?" then the answer is
that I don't know. As I said, I *assume* it's the charger itself. But
see my comments below.

>One test would be to put a volt meter on the lead from the power supply
>to determine if the voltage changes....

Certainly worth trying. Next time it happens I'll do that. My
expectation is that voltage will drop from its present (unloaded) 5.7
V to zero. But again, see below about the battery scenario.

>Another would be use a different power supply

That's another good idea. I'll have a dig around but I'm pretty sure I
don't have that combination of voltage, current and cradle plug.

>have you looked at the battery for damage or leaking?

You may be onto something here. It could well be down to some fault
with either the PPC battery or - more likely - the extra one I always
have trickle-charging behind it in the cradle. For example maybe the
charger circuitry has some cut-out on overload, and that's being
deployed. On close inspection the spare battery currently being
charged behind the 2210 feels slightly thicker in the middle. I had
that problem with an earlier battery, although the issue in that case
was that it was causing the battery cover to spring open
intermittently (usually when climbing a steep hill in the rain). All
my batteries since the original 900 mAH have been 1000 mAH types, new,
but bought from UK ebay suppliers. Any views?

>checked for damaged connector pins?

Yes, they look OK.

Several!

Leave the spare battery out of the charger and see if you still have the
problem.

Yes, thanks Ron, since noticing that slight bulging that's what I've
done. Too early of course to be sure, but so far no cut-outs.
