| Need an Activesync that works with Windows Millennium or 98SE I don't really need the entire Activesync just the drivers to get the USB PAN working on Windows Millennium or Windows 98SE. I've searched Microsoft's site and can't find an earlier version of Activesync anywhere. Any ideas besides upgrade to XP? TIA |

It installs OK but it doesn't get past looking for new drivers for Generic RNDIS. So I guess I have to google "Generic RNDIS + Millennium" now. |

I have a WM5 device, a WM6 device and a WM6.1 device and I tried to get phone as modem to work on all three of them but no luck yet. I even changed the setting for the USB port on the PPC and that didn't change much. BTW it isn't mandatory that I get USB PAN to work on Windows 98 but I wanted to try it out since I still have a Windows 98 computer around. |

I think Activesync is a dead-end- typically the various versions of Activesync only included drivers for devices that existed up to that time. As Activesync 3.8 doesn't recognize WM5+ devices, and WinMo didn't support PAN natively pre-WM5 (so 3.8 presumably has no PAN drivers), I suspect you'll probably have to use Bluetooth. There is a "USB Modem" driver floating around for the HTC Wizard (WM5) that was independent of Activesync. Whether that'd work on any other device, I couldn't tell you. You can find it, as well as some info, here: http://www.pdagold.com/articles/detail.asp?a=269 I did use it with my old Wizard once or twice via USB, but I usually tethered via BT. The article claims the driver is for Win 2000 and XP, but I suspect it's worth a shot. |

Bluetooth? Yes, since all I'm looking for is a way to use my phone for the Internet that would work too but the Bluetooth Dongle I have only supports WINDOWS 2000 and up. I read somewhere there was a Bluetooth Dongle that supports Windows 98 but I couldn't find it locally and now I've forgotten who makes it. Maybe I should check out a newsgroup that deals with 98 or ME. BTW I dug out my copy of Outlook 2000 tonight and I wonder if it will work with Activesync. |

Yes, since all I'm looking for is a way to use my phone for > the Internet that would work too but the Bluetooth Dongle I have only > supports WINDOWS 2000 and up. I have one of the earliest versions of the DLink DBT-120, it supports 98 and up, but newer hardware revisions don't. (D-Link has an annoying habit of reusing the same model number forever- the DBT-120 is the only number they've ever used for a USB BT dongle, and it's ben sold for at least 7 or 8 years in several hardware revisions, each with incompatible drivers!) Ironically, I still have a Win98 notebook but have never used the dongle on it- the notebook lacks USB ports. I used to sync my PDAs with it (and even use DUN) via the built-in IR port! > BTW I dug out my copy of Outlook 2000 tonight and I wonder if it will work > with Activesync. Yes and no: Activesync 3.8 supports OL 2K (my Dell Axim X5 and Audiovox Maestro both came with 3.8/Outlook 2K,) but 3.8 will not sync with your devices. I don't remember if AS 4.x supports OL 2K or not- my WM5 HTC Wizard came with OL 2K2 so I upgraded before trying. In either case, the point is moot- Win98 won't sync with WinMo 5+ because of the differing versions of Activesync. |

This laptop had a working IR port at one time. It also had a working internal network card and modem but when it failed to boot I found out from the Internet the only way I could get it to boot was to remove the internal network card and modem. The IR port failed a few days after that and now I have to disable the driver for it or forever be hounded by error messages. The HD was the first thing to fail but the 12 gig drive going to be replaced even if it didn't fail. > > BTW I dug out my copy of Outlook 2000 tonight and I wonder if it will > work > > with Activesync. > > Yes and no: Activesync 3.8 supports OL 2K (my Dell Axim X5 and Audiovox > Maestro both came with 3.8/Outlook 2K,) but 3.8 will not sync with your > devices. * > > I don't remember if AS 4.x supports OL 2K or not- my WM5 HTC Wizard came > with OL 2K2 so I upgraded before trying. *In either case, the point is > moot- Win98 won't sync with WinMo 5+ because of the differing versions of > Activesync. The laptop I am on right now has 4 different operating systems on it and I'm thinking of adding DOS, Windows 98 First Edition and XP to make it 7 but before I can put DOS on it I have to make the first partition FAT16. I have AS 4.2 on the 2000 Pro partition and currently I'm using that partition with USB PAN for the internet. I'll have to install OL 2K and see what happens myself. BTW I ordered a PCMCIA card to give this computer WiFi. If that card works with 98 I'll be able to run WMWiFiRouter on a PPC and get Interent to it that way. |

Yes, project is a good term for putting 7 operating systems on the same laptop. BTW my next project will be to put 7 operating systems on the same Tablet Computer. While I can't tell you about the 98SE yet, I can tell you that the following BT USB from Kensington is currently working with WINDOWS 2000 Professional. http://us.kensington.com/html/14409.html As a matter of fact, I am using a Bluetooth connection to a PPC for this post and I'll let you know if I ever get BT to work with 98SE. |

When I ordered a BT dongle that works with 98SE I told them about Belkin and Iogear and then I find out they ordered me a Linksys that they claim will work with 98SE and I'm still waiting for it. I mentioned earlier about trying things on a Tablet computer too. While the BT software for the Tablet said it would work with Windows 98SE none of the other drivers would load so that Tablet is limited to Windows 2000 and above for other reasons. |

The guy at the computer store told me he ordered me a Linksys Bluetooth Dongle but it turned out to be a Gemini Bluetooth Dongle with no software whatsoever. Before I bought it I had them plug it into a computer of theirs to see if it loaded any drivers. It loaded software on their computer but when I tried it on 98SE, ME. Windows 2000 or Vista and all I would get was an "Unknown device." The box says: Software support Windows 98/98SE/ME Windows 2000 Windows XP Windows Vista But since it doesn't have any software I have no idea what the box means by "Software support." I got it to load on XP Pro but the only thing I could get to work with the adapter was BT PAN even though the PPC I was connected to has BT DUN, BT FTP and other Services. So I could not get BT to work on 98SE but remember, I thought I was going to get a Belkin, IOGear or Linksys BT adapter and ended up with a Gemini adapter with no software. |

Ok, I found a BT dongle that works as advertised with 98SE but it cost $39.99. It is a Linksys USBBT100 Bluetooth USB Adapter http://www.frys.com/product/3916078?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG BTW I also found a BT dongle that works with 2000 and XP and only cost $14.99 IOGEAR USB BLUETOOTH ADAPTOR http://www.frys.com/product/5727672?...H:MAIN_RSLT_PG |
