| Problem syncing Dell Axim X50v with ActiveSync - May be device I have not been able to sync to my desktop (98SE) or my laptop (XPSP2). It never shows/makes a connection. I've reinstalled AS on the desktop. The only system parm that is different is that the device power switch no longer works. However, I've been able to manage power using Spb Pocket Plus. And I don' know with certainty exactly when the device stopped syncing. Anyone know if failure of the power switch could affect the ability to sync. If there is another way to sync? Any other ideas? TIA |

It won't sync with 98SE at all. the version of AS required for the X50 won't run on Win9x/ME. It requires Win2000 and maybe WinXP or later. On XP, when you dock it, does your computer make a docking noise or show a device is connected? If not, the connector may be malfunctioning. If that is the case, Infrared or bluetooth are your only sync options without trying to get a device repaired. (As opposed to the similar X51, which was WM5 out-of-the-box.) Theoretically, if using WM2003, he could be using AS 3.8, which runs on 98SE- I think I have 3.8 on an old Toshiba Tecra around here somewhere, but it might be 3.7. I used to sync my PPC 2002 Audiovox Maestro and 2003 Dell Axim X5 with the Tosh. Of course, now that I type this out loud, this might also be his problem- if the OP upgraded the X50 to WM5 recently, but is still trying to connect with the 3.8 installed on his PCs, that isn't going to work. He'll need to upgrade (downgrade?) ;-) to AS 4.x... (And, as you say, forget about the Win98 box- AS 4.x won't run on it at all.) |

Curious to know if it is still available/possible. From what I've read, you don't want it. Apparently it was very slow and buggy, and Dell seemingly lost interest, never issuing any bug fixes and quietly stopped selling it. X51s came with WM5, and can be had for less than $100 on eBay. They reportedly worked much better, being designed from the ground up for the hardware architecture changes that came with WM5. (WM5 devices use persistant flash memory for storage, where WM2003 and prior used fast battery-backed RAM. The X50 supposedly has fairly slow flash memory, since it was only intended to be used for the ROM firmware. The "leftover" flash was pressed into service as storage memory after the WM5 upgrade and is reportedly dog-slow. Search these forums a few years back and you find horror stories from folks who downgraded right back to 2003! > Thanks for your input. I wish I has a better answer. I tend to subscribe to the "there are no such things as coincidences" theory with respect to electronics. Since it will no longer sync with either PC, I suspect a configuration issue or some type of software glitch on the device, rather than a configuration problem on both machines. If you synced everything recently, so the PCs are up to date. you might delete the partnerships (on each PCs and in Activesync on the device itself,) and start from scratch, trying to create new partnerships to see if you can get a connection again. If not, hard reset the device back to "out of the box" condition and REALLY start from scratch! >> >> >> >> |

| Re: Problem syncing Dell Axim X50v with ActiveSync - May be device Nevetheless, note that there're filesys.exe hacks that make the x50v WM5 upgrade somewhat better in this respect (see http://www.mobilitysite.com/boards/x...-wm5-tips.html ) .. (And the unofficial WM6.1 upgrades (see http://www.mobilitysite.com/boards/x...im-update.html and http://www.mobilitysite.com/boards/x...axim-x51v.html ) are stated to have almost completely eliminated the problem. I haven't tested them personally as I do't have an x50v. On my similar hx4700 [as far as the fileyss prolems are concerned], on the other hand, become pretty usable with the WM6.1 upgrae.)
