| Question about using a Dell Axim X5 as a mobile phone. Hi guys, I know it may not be the best option but is it possible to slot a compact flash GPRS card in a Dell Axim X5 and use it as an ordinary mobile phone? Cheers, Steve |

| Re: Question about using a Dell Axim X5 as a mobile phone. Yes - I have done this with my 4700. I have a CF GPRS/GSM card. It's not ideal as a phone , I use it mainly=by for anywhere internet access. -- Laura Rooke (MVP - Mobile Devices) |

I just used google (http://groups.google.com/advanced_group_search) to look up axim x5 gprs and got 184 hits. I did a quick look and found at least one explicit yes. I think I also so leads for more detailed info. >Cheers, >Steve ----------------------------------------- To reply to me, remove the underscores (_) from my email address (and please indicate which newsgroup and message). Yes and no. GPRS cards do not interface with the PPC's audio, so you can't talk into the Axim's mic or hear through the speaker. You have to plug a wired headset into the GPRS card. Secondly, the X5, IIRC, has no function to keep the CF slot powered when the X5 is turned off, so your "phone" can no longer receive calls when you turn off the Axim. In short, your Axim won't work as an "ordinary" mobile phone, but more of an irritating akward-to-use mobile phone. Might I suggest that instead of investing $150-200 in a CF GPRS card, you'd be better off with a bluetooth CF card and an "ordinary" bluetooth phone or even a used (if new is economically unfeasable) Pocket PC phone. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |
