Windows Media Player 11 / HP iPAQ 4150/4155 Issue

Folks,

I installed Windows Media Player 11 today and it reports this error: "Your
device is using an outdated driver that is no longer supported by Windows
Media Player. For additional assistance, click Web Help."

I did not find the web help particularly useful (only suggesting I remove
WMP 11) and I could not immediately find the source of the problem. I
finally discovered that it was my Pocket PC (iPAQ 4150).

Since I don't use that device to play music, I absolutely do not care
whether there is or is not an updated driver. But, I certainly want to get
rid of this annoying message. Does anybody know how to disassociate the
Pocket PC from Media Player?

If that's not easily done, any idea when HP might possibly produce an
updated driver for this?

Thanks,
Paul

I have the same error message for my Dell Axim x3i. I hope find a way for
WMP 11 to ignore or it as it is annoying to get that error message every
time my device is cradled.

I would imagine, since MS (and the world in general)
has gone so over the top
with DRM, that the PPC is not "secure" enough vs.
the dedicated media players, hence the bitching.

It doesn't complain about my Axim X5 running 2002 but it does on another
computer for my Toshiba E800 running 2003SE.

Re: Windows Media Player 11 / HP iPAQ 4150/4155 Issue

Chris,

This is all the more reason to be frustrated, knowing it is a known issue
since the last beta. It's one thing to tell you when you first run it or
until you say, "don't tell me anymore", but it's completely different to
keep complaining every singe time you start the program.

Of course, it may not matter at all now, as my Pocket PC will not sync with
my PC any longer. In an effort to fix the problem, I upgraded to ActiveSync
4.2 on Oct. 31. That seemed to work OK. But, yesterday (Nov. 2) afternoon,
Norton Antivirus told me it had updates for me, so I installed them. After
that, the PocketPC stopped syncing. It's been 24 hours now... no sync.

Norton AV to blame? Something resulting from rebooting the machine after
updating Norton AV? Who knows.

The good news is that, since I can't connect to sync, Windows Media Player
11 is no longer complaining. :-)

Don't you just love these software interactions?

Paul

PS - In all seriousness, this has to get fixed in the next couple of days,
because I'll be out traveling for the next 3 weeks.

Re: Windows Media Player 11 / HP iPAQ 4150/4155 Issue

Hmmm,

interesting. Actually all i did in the meantime is remove my ppc from
my cradle. And the msg doesnt constantly pop up! however i do need to
replace it if i have to sync, altho i havent really been using my ppc
much lately so its not that much of a problem for me. perhaps i will
try upgrading my activesync as well. as i am still using 3.8. any
difference between 3.8 and 4.2? also my other thought is to sell my
ipaq 4150 (which i love) and buy something newer and better! hahaha

I have the same problem in 4.20, so upgrading will not get rid of it.
thanks for the hint on removing from the cradle (the message is a pain)
