New Mobile Device Center (for Vista)

Has anyone played with Mobile Device Center for Vista yet?

I have it installed, and I don't see anything for backing up your hand held
device.
ActiveSync has backup and restore.

Am I wrong?
Is there plans to add this feature?

Thanks,
JedK

Rewrite that statement this way:

"ActiveSync had backup and restore."

and you would be correct. Starting with AS 4.0 and up it lost the backup
and restore capability. Given that trend from Microsoft, I would not expect
their new mobile device offerings to have such capabilities. If it is added
that would be great, but I would not expect it.

As has been pointed out, AS 4 lost backup/restore for WM5 devices only.
Pre-WM5 devices can still backup/restore from AS 4.x, with the same UI AS
3.x had.

Re: New Mobile Device Center (for Vista)

Are you attaching a WM5 device, or a pre-WM5 one? (2003, 2003SE). As was
mentioned Backup/Restore was removed for AS 4.x and WM5. I have not tried a
pre-WM5 device on WMDC, as that capability only showed up recently. I'm
curious if the legacy capabilities are gone in WMDC for older devices.

Re: New Mobile Device Center (for Vista)

With my 2003SE device the back up restore is in the Mobile Device Settings
section. Click on the >>more link to show the backup and restore selection.

True, that. I was assuming that such an early adopter of Vista posting in a
pocketPC newsgroup might indeed have a newer WM5 device. But as far as I
know you are correct, Todd.

Re: New Mobile Device Center (for Vista)

ActiveSync does not install into Windows Vista.
You must install the new Windows Mobile Device Center.

Re: New Mobile Device Center (for Vista)

I have 2 devices
I have a new WM5 and that works fine with WMDC.
I have an older WM2002 and when I put that one in I get the following:
"Windows Mobile Device Center supports device with Windows Mobile 2003 or
later. Earlier verions of Windows Mobile are not supported"

So the interesting thing is that you can't install ActiveSync in Vista, and
you can't have an older PocketPC.
You are forced to get a new device, or use a 3rd party sync tool.

Re: New Mobile Device Center (for Vista)

Ah, thanks both of you. I was aware of the lack of support for 2002 and
older devices. I just wasn't sure if they followed on the concept of keeping
the features that you had in AS3.8 when you hooked up a 2003 PPC. Appears
then that likely they did what they did in AS4.x. When you hook up a pre-WM5
device, you essentially run AS3.8 code underneath.

Beautiful. I suppose synching my handheld PC, an NEC 790, is completely
out of the question then!

Don't most 3rd party sync tools still use Activesync as an underlying
"base" and crowbar extra functionality in? If so, these won't likely
work with WDC either unless updated, or unless the "engine" under WDC's
hood is remarkably similar to AS.

Re: New Mobile Device Center (for Vista)

I also have two devices. I sync the older device with my laptop running
WindowsXP and then I sync the newer pocket pc with the laptop, then I sync
the newer device with my Vista computer. That is how I can sync outlook data
from my old device with Vista.

I didn't know that. That stinks.
