Re: pdf and ebook reader for ipaq pocket pc

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readerforppc.html

The above is the only pdf reader which supports "tagging" in pdf files
which allow text to "wrap" to fit into the small ppc screen.

Tips;

Use the activesync install which also installs an activesync "plugin"
which will attempt to "tag" synced pdf's (wmdc, sorry, don't think that
works yet)

Use the menu "exit" option when finished reading to prevent the reader
from draining the battery when the device is powered off.

Ignore the "old program" warning on install... it should work on any
pocketpc... but does not run on smartphones (no stylus)

For help, http://www.adobeforums.com/webx/.ef38cea/ is a better forum
for reader problems, limits and info.

Re: pdf and ebook reader for ipaq pocket pc

Thank you - I appreciate your input but that is one big piece of software
that seriously lags on my machine, so I was looking for alternatives. Still,
thanks for replying.

>> that seriously lags on my machine <<

might try
http://ardownload.adobe.com/pub/adob...er-ppc2002.exe

If it's not running, it can't lag it, hence the "exit" tip... that and
it can be installed to a memory card.

imho, the inability to "wrap" which is common to all current
alternatives makes the reader unusable... that said, might "still" take
a look at Foxit.

For any other format than the misbegotten pdfs, try Gowerpoint's
microbook. Except that for MS .lit, MS Reader is about the only choice.

Sadly, it's the only PDF reader that tagfiles for word wrap.

For ebooks I use Microsoft Reader, and use the Reader plug-in for Word to
convert .txt files to Reader's .lit format.

This doesn't help with DRM'd files you can't import into Word, of course.

I don't know about tagging, but foxit reader does a pretty nice job
with pdfs in landscape mode on a 640x480 screen...if you've got good eyes.
If it's just text, aren't there utilities to convert pdf to text?
There's always text to speech.

Re: pdf and ebook reader for ipaq pocket pc

I use Pocketxpdf and find it by far the best PPC PDF reader and it's
free.

Any chance that it wraps text?

Re: Re: pdf and ebook reader for ipaq pocket pc

No, but it has a very flexible zoom that makes this less of an issue.
You can drag a rectangle which zooms to exactly fill the screen width
or height.

Most of my pdf needs are text centric... full pages of text which,
without tagging, requires horizontally scrolling each line which is not
a realistic option for more than a page or two.

fwiw, the adobe ppc reader has this as well.

Thanks for the link, have it in my list of alternatives.

I've been toyng with the idea of ditching mobile use of PDFs altogether!

At http://www.pdfonline.com/pdf2word/index.asp, you can upload your PDFs,
and redownload them as Word .doc files, with graphics intact. The Word
docs obviously wrap, and you can edit them to adjust font, text size, etc.

The company offers this service to show off their desktop software that
they sell to perform these conversions.

My pleasure- unfortunately Pocket IE/IE Mobile seems to lack the ability
to upload a file, so you need to do it from a PC.

If I get bored later tonight, I might try and see if Opera or Netfront
can do it.

Re: pdf and ebook reader for ipaq pocket pc

Ran a test with a 100 page file I use for comparisons yesterday...

While if did a good job on what it converted, there are a couple of
considerations;

The converter had around a 20 page size limit on this file... a mix of
text, images and tables... a size limit is significant since there is no
way to "chunk" a pdf file into smaller pieces to process them separately.

Huge size difference... the 100 page pdf was 3.3 megs... the 21 pages in
rtf ended up at 13.2 megs which would have been around 65 megs had the
conversion been complete... a twenty fold size jump.

The inability to upload with pie bites again... surprised that no one
has come up with a ppc utility where you ender the upload page url and
it uploads to that destination... number of considerations such as
"after upload, then what?"

Thanks again... will be great for most pdf's
