ActiveSync--Out of Control

I finally got ActiveSync (A/S) to work on my xv6800 (Simple answer: By
default A/S is disabled by WirelessSync until you change the setting in
Wireless Sync, Settings). The Wizard ran and I am pretty sure I set it to
sync only Files, not Contacts, Calendar, etc. I have not yet put any files
in the folder created on my desktop to sync. But when I finally connected
the phone to the PC (a dodgy enterprise, to say the least, but that is a
separate topic) I found that indeed I could easily move files in and out of
the phone with Windows Explorer which was pretty good. But A/S started to
sync Files (there should have been none to sync) and Contacts (which weren't
supposed to sync at all). Now I have a ton of duplicate Contacts to delete
one-by-one. How can I change what is getting synced? I don't want anything
to sync except Files. I can't figure this out.

And I should also ask this: If Active Sync lets me move stuff in and out
with Win Explorer, can I set the software to sync absolutely nothing? Why
go through the extra step of first moving a file to the sync folder if I can
drag or paste it into the phone directly?

In AS, I think it is Tools|Options. Just uncheck what you don't
want sync'd.

On files, if nothign was on your PC, it began syncing what was on
your device, even if only empty folders, back to the PC.

Sure, just dock as a guest.

Doing it manually is fine for a few files. If you have dozens of
files in half a dozen folders, it gets very cumbersome to do it
manually. I have 152 files in 11 folders. No way I'd try to do
that manually.

Re: ActiveSync--Out of Control

Thanks! When the phone was connected and A/S ran it took my Contacts from
Outlook on my PC and added them to those on the device, in most cases
duplicating them (although the duplicates may not have been exactly the
same). The Contacts on the device sync wirelessly with my Outlook Contacts
on a PC at my office. As far as I can tell A/S did not add the pre-existing
Contacts on the device to those on the connected PC.
When I run A/S, whether the phone is connected or not, Tools, Options is
greyed out. I just spent a half hour removing some of the new "duplicates"
in my phone Contacts, so I am hesitant to connect again until I am sure I
won't end up with the same duplicatiokn all over again. Or even worse,
triplicates for those I have not had time to remove!

And the answer is . . .

I think I found the problem. Microsoft gives the impression that choosing
which folders to sync when running the A/S Wizard is enough. Not so.
Poking around blindly I found a similar set of options on the xv6800 (Active
Sync, Menu, Options) and discovered that "Contacts" was checked (I had
unchecked Contacts in the wizard). That would explain why A/S was syncing
Contacts inspite of my choice not to.
To add to the Microsoft fun I unchecked Contacts in Options on the phone. A
message appeared telling me that doing so would delete the Contacts that had
been synced on this PC. Hmm. As stated, that meant that it wold remove all
the extra contacts added from my laptop that I never wanted synced, leaving
my "real" contacts--those synced wirelessly from my office desktop across
the state line--untouched. That sounded pretty reasonable so I continued.
Well, in typical Microsoft fashion, they didn't really mean what they said.
Now I have no Contacts at all! At least until I get wireless sync up and
running again.
I am not a total Microsoft hater. After all, I replaced my antiquated (but
bullet-proof) Palm-based PDA/Phone with a WM phone figuring this was not the
Microsoft of yore. The one that substituted size and marketing for quality.
Well, some nice advantages, to be sure. But enough problems to think that
somebody in Redmond keeps stomping on my foot.

Re: ActiveSync--Out of Control

Oh yes, finally the same Options appeared in A/S, Tools, Options. No idea
why. Or why not.

The problem here is not ActiveSync, but "Wireless Sync" which is not a
Microsoft product, and doesn't seem to be properly integated with A/S.
Perhaps that's why it switches A/S off by default.

You should direct your complaints at whoever wrote and supplied
Wireless-Sync.

Re: And the answer is . . .

Thanks. Sorry for venting. As I understand it the wireless sync software
is from a company (IntelliSync) now owned by Nokia. However, as far as I
can tell the problems I had after fixing the wireless sync issue (disabling
ActiveSync by default) seem to be A/S issues. But it's moot for the time
being. I expect to get my Contacts restored tonight (via Wireless Sync),
the delay of which is another story. Surprising how many other phone
functions depend on those Contacts, such as voice dialing and caller ID (I
used to get the caller's name and in some circumstances a distinctive
ringtone; now just a phone number). Maybe more. Ultimately I think these
are Verizon problems; of course, they see it otherwise and point me to the
makers of all the different software, including Microsoft, Nokia, etc.
