| HP iPaq 112 suddenly dying Grabbed the iPaq off the USB cable (charger and activesync). Came to work. 6hrs later went to turn it on. Dead as a doornail. Removed battery. Sometimes this resets it. Put battery back in. Turned on. Or tried to. No response. Got a USB cable out and plugged it in, thinking that perhaps the battery has died. LED is orange indicating charging. After half an hour still no response. Pressed in the reset button on the side. Still no response. Battery may be U/S. Not sure. It's the first time that I've seen this and the PDA is a little over 12 months old. Just wondering if anyone here has seen anything like this. |

Did you try charging it directly? i.e. through the ac adaptor rather than through the USB port. |

Anyway, an update. I borrowed a friend's USB cable which has the right fitting. It started to charge but I still couldn't turn it on. Then about 15 mins. later it turned itself on, presumably after the battery got enough charge to run, started booting them turned itself off again. I tried to turn it on but it stayed dead. When I got home from work I put it on the USB cable and it started charging. Windows didn't detect it so ActiveSync didn't respond. An hour later I checked it. It was charging and it was on and A/S was doing its thing. Luckily no data was lost. I left it on overnight. Around noon I disconnected it and left it off the charger. Tonight at work it still had 100 percent on the battery indicator. It's currently on my laptop as I type this and A/S'ing and is indicating a full charge. I don't know what happened but so far it all seems to be fine. I might source a second battery off Ebay I think, just to be sure. Doesn't hurt to have a spare. Just wish that they sold chargers for them. Maybe they do. Might see if Ebay has them too. |

Many PDAs can be charged from the USB->PC connection, but this occurs at a much slower rate than from a "Direct" AC adaptor. Additionally, if the battery-level drops to a critical level (say, sub-5%), then the USB circuit may not detect the device, and thus may not initiate the charging cycle. For these reasons, it is best to have an AC adaptor for emergency and/ or high-speed recharging, and to think of the USB-charger as a useful secondary charging method. http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=168031 -- WH |

My old Dell Axim X5 was like that- if the power dipped below 20% or so, it would no longer charge via USB, only the AC adapter. > For these reasons, it is best to have an AC adaptor for emergency and/ > or high-speed recharging, and to think of the USB-charger as a useful > secondary charging method. > > http://www.expansys.com/d.aspx?i=168031 Good advice. |

My Cingular 8125 is similar. But I can sometimes get it to charge by turning it on! ----------------------------------------- To reply to me, remove the underscores (_) from my email address (and please indicate which newsgroup and message).
