Simple Excel Mobile usage

I want to use Excel Mobile 6.1 to read and make occasional changes in a
simple .xls file.
1) The only function I currently use is COUNTA and that is implemented.
2) When I open a file, View has Toolbar and Status Bar ticked. Reversing
them seems to be remembered.
3) When I make a change and try to close, the application goes
hysterical: "Unsupported content and formatting may be lost..." with
"Save As...", Discard and Cancel buttons. What must I do to effect "OK"?
i.e. to say "Do your best!" If I save as a new file, my 49k file becomes
77k. I just want to have a highest common factor file to swap between PC
and mobile.
4) The vertical slider does a good job; the horizontal slider seems to
do nothing. How to I navigate right and left?
5) On a PC, I normally shuffle columns by cutting and pasting and sort
by different columns. Both seem easy: Menu/Cut + Paste and
Menu/Tools/Sort...
6) What should I read? Google Groups in microsoft.public.pocketpc on
subject Excel has little of recent date and old stuff seems obsolete.
e.g. no Excel Mobile help in Activesync help - version 4.5.0

Re: Simple Excel Mobile usage

Think a key question is what version of excel created the file that you
are modifying...

With the advent of office2007 the file formats were radically changed...
different extension, so, the device's alarm may be that you might
accidentaly both change the file format and the extension...

....which should not be a problem as excel on the pc should be able to
subsequently open it.

try the save as and use the exact same name and see if you end up with
two files (which would indicated two different extensions) then sync and
see what you end up with back on the pc.

_obviously_ do the above with test files or disposable copies of files
until you understand what's happening.

It is just telling you it found some type of formatting and that
if you save the file, that formatting will be changed or lost.
Usually no big deal. Just hit Save As, then select the same file
name. This dialog box was done to warn people. Years ago, it
would save and destroy formatting it didn't support with no
warning, which would tick people off.

Don't worry about the file size. All versions of Excel tend to
bloat files a bit when saving to non-native formats. 2007 almost
always makes a 2003 .xls file larger than Excel 2003 will.

I've not noticed that - seems to work fine here. For now, just
scroll right/left with the cursor by using the d-pad.

There isn't much help out there.
http://www.ehansberry.com/pages/Pock...lFunctions.htm has a
list of functions and I think that is up to date. I don't know of
any "Pocket Excel How To" articles though. It is assumed you know
Excel and will be able to easily identify the common features via
the menu names.

Thanks for the good advice. I am currently living with that oddity.

It now seems to work in some circumstances which I do not understand. I
can drag to the right by pulling on the column name "row".

Sorting is horrible! Suppose I have:

A B
1 x 2
2 y 1

and sort column B. I end up with

A B
1 x 1
2 y 2

I would like to end up with
A B
1 y 1
2 x 2

In the real excel I am given a "Sort Warning"; "Microsoft Office Excel
found data next to your selection. Since you have not selected the data,
it will not be sorted. What do you want to do?"
I can choose "Expand the selection" (default) or "Continue with the
current selection". The PDA action corresponds to the second
alternative.
(My actual data consists of about 300 rows and 20 columns.)

I can get 2003 Excel to do useful things for me - not necessarily
efficiently!

I find I have a solution for the problem below.

I had a thought which worked.
I clicked the keyboard icon; CTL and A selects everything.
This expands the selection for sorting.

Not sure if this is related, but, here's a post of Excel functions _not_
supported in pExcel.

<http://bevhoward.com/pexcel.htm>

If any of these are used anywhere in your spreadsheets, it could be a
factor.

It will be turned into text.

The converse list of what *is* supported is here -
http://www.ehansberry.com/pages/Pock...lFunctions.htm

Bev, your list is missing some new Excel 2007 functions that
aren't supported, like sumifs, countifs, etc.

Thanks for that. I had hit the lack of HYPERLINK. I had suspected it was
an Internet Explorer/Opera discrepancy as clicking a .htm file causes
Windows Mobile to use Opera to open it. I don't have good instructions
on hacking the registry to change that.

P.S. A typical PC screen is wider than it is long; my Windows Mobile PDA
screen is narrower than it is long. Is it possible to turn the
presentation of data on the PDA screen through a right angle? (I hit
this in PDA Excel which lacks the TRANSPOSE functionality I might use in
Excel 2003.)

I generally use Pocket Excel in landscape mode. All Windows
Mobile 2003 SE and later devices support this natively in the
Settings|Screen icon.

Anywhere to get the 2007 missings? I'll add these two and wait for a
complete list. (don't have excel 2007)

http://visio.mvps.org/Excel_2007.htm seems to have most, but I
noticed it is missing COUNTIFS() so it may be missing others

This look right?

> CUBEKPIMEMBER
> CUBEMEMBER
> CUBEMEMBERPROPERTY
> CUBERANKEDMEMBER
> CUBESET
> CUBESETCOUNT
> CUBEVALUE
> SUMIFS

That's from processing the table in your link and comparing it to the
list I came up with a couple of years ago.

The pexcel.htm page now has the above additions.
