Dell Axim X51v Windows Mobile Upgrade?

Just called Dell to see if they offered an upgrade from WM5 to WM6. Was
told no. Is this right? Has anyone else been able to upgrade an Axim?

Dell is telling you the truth. They don't support it. Doesn't mean it hasn't
been done. If it has, you may find information at http://www.aximsite.com/

As Sven has pointed out, you'll find the definite answer in the AximSite
forums; most importantly, at
http://www.mobilitysite.com/boards/x...im-update.html

Nice to hear. That sounds better than the typical experience for X50 users
with the official upgrade from PPC2003 to WM5 ;)

Re: Dell Axim X51v Windows Mobile Upgrade?

It's because of the hardware that the x50v / iPAQ hx4700 has a much worse
time running the factory WM5 than the x51v. (The cooked 6.1 ROM's are far
better in this respect - at least on the hx4700. Haven't checked it on the
x50v.)

Hi,
Officially all roms not released from the OEM are not supported from the OEM
(like Dell) or Microsoft.

If you choose to use these roms you do so at your own risk. Your device may
be damaged.

Yep, that's where the link take you. He's since released an A08 but there
seems to be some old problems that have resurfaced in it.
A07 has been flawless for me. The best thing about Football's ROMs is they
are as close as possible to what Dell might have released had they not
abandoned the Axims. IOW, no third party add-on garbage like all the other
ROMs floating around out there.

Thanks Werner! One question...

Are the backups that were done under WM5 and transferred to my PC
useless once the transition to WM6.1 is complete? Just want to confirm
that all the software previously on the X51v will have to be reinstalled
from scratch, not from the backups. That is my understanding.

Dunno, haven't tested the OS upgrade mode of Sprite / the new Spb Backup in
this particular case.

Re: Dell Axim X51v Windows Mobile Upgrade?

Find a German version of XDA-Developers. This is a site of hobbyists who
'cook' ROMs. The legality of this is debatable to some, clear to others, and
irrelevent to still more. In any case, Dell did not make any WM6 upgrades
available for the 51 at all, so there isn't an official way to get one in
any language. Take a look at XDA-Developers and see if maybe they don't have
something for you, or can point you to it.
