The basic indicator is the stylus... or lack of one.

The pocketpc devices have a touch sensitive screen for input in addition
to basic buttons and often extended "thumb" keyboards.

Smartphones do not have a stylus... all input is done with the keypad
and navigation buttons. Not sure if any smartphones have thumb keyboards.

As a result, the smartphones are significantly smaller, have smaller
screens but are more rugged. The PocketPC's have much more "computer"
functionality plus virtually all pocketpc software written will work on
any pocketpc where the smartphone software pool is significantly smaller.

Welcome to the club... microsoft has already changed the official names
to make it even less understandable ;-)

Hope this helps,

Had a good laugh when I read this...after buying my new PPC 6800 through
Bell Canada, I spent a lot of time trying to find out whether I owned a
pocket PC or a smart phone!!!!
