| Windows Media Player 10 and IPAQ 2495?? Hi out there... PPC newbie here and I have several issues... been trying to figure biggest problem out for the last 2-3 days with no luck. At this point... I'm not even sure WHERE my problem is... but am leaning toward Mobile 5's WMP 10. I've loaded a couple of chapters of a Book-on-Tape... into a CF (64mb), an SD card (2gb) and even copied 1 chapter from the CF into IPAQ memory. WMP keeps saying "Cannot play the file. The file is either corrupted or the Player does not support the format you are trying to play". Files are in MP3 format... and they all play on the PC using WMP 9... tried at 128bps and 64bps. Could have sworn that I had a couple of MP3s play 7-10 days ago... but don't remember ANY playing since I picked up the SD card... Anyone have any ideas?? Thanks in advance... Steve |

| Re: Windows Media Player 10 and IPAQ 2495?? WMP is not a suitable app for what you need to do, in this case because it does not support bookmarking. There are several other ppc mp3 players around and I am sure you will get some recommendations here, but start with a google search for POCKETPC MP3 PLAYER BOOKMARKS Beverly Howard [MS MVP-Mobile Devices] |

| Re: Windows Media Player 10 and IPAQ 2495?? Hi Beverly... Since your tag line says you're a "mobile guru"... I wonder if you can tell me how to wipe out my IPAQ 2495 and reload Mobile 5... same as reformatting a PC and re-installing Windows... except I know what I'm doing on a PC. I now see several other symptoms (which lead me to starting over again)... 1. Downloaded and installed MortPlayer... it installed, accepted some mp3 files but would not play them. I hit the > button and NO time ticked off... so I removed it. 2. Then downloaded and installed PocketMusic... 1st time install failed; 2nd time it installed. However, when I ran PocketMusic... it never showed up on the screen nor was did it show in "Running Programs". 3. Other curiosities... 3a clicked on "speaker" (Start-line icon on right)... it shows Speaker ON but NO volume... I run the slider up but it goes back to bottom. 3b half the time I power up (in the cradle); seems ActiveSync doesn't start up and the PC never connects. I start ActiveSync (on PPC) and it doesn't connect up with PC until I do Start/Settings/Connections and change the USB ActiveSync Interface. Only matters that I choose the one that's NOT set... it reboots and then connects. 3c Already went thru my difficulty with Windows Media Player... maybe it doesn't have bookmarks (good feature) BUT... it still should function (in my mind anyway) So... I'm now feeling that original owner may have installed/removed something that shouldn't have been. I've the IPAQ, cradle, book and CD... but don't see any references (so far) to starting back to out-of-the-box position. Any pointers?? Thanks in advance again!! | Re: Windows Media Player 10 and IPAQ 2495?? Hi Werner... OK... tried it 6-7 times and it keeps coming back asking for MY security code and programs are not deleted. Here's what I've tried... all with power ON. I've pressed the Calendar and iTask at same time (best I could)... Calendar then iTask and vice-versa. Once both were down, I pressed the Reset (on bottom). Although I held for 2-5 seconds... the display went blank (it powered down). I waited 5-10 minutes (I expected it to reboot like a PC) but ended up manually powering up. No change. I also tried to hold the Power button in too (with the Calendar/iTask)... like a Palm Pilot... then press the reset... same. After I send this... I'm going to power it down... press the Calendar/iTask... THEN try to Power On and, if I get a light, then I'll hit reset. Frustrating... Secondly, to carry out the hard-reset, press and hold down the Calendar and iTask buttons (the two lower outside buttons), and then insert the pointer to push the reset button. Keep all the buttons held down until the screen totally fades, then release all. After a further ten seconds, press the reset button again and the PDA should turn on. The User Guide should tell you everything else you need to know. -- WH |

| Re: Windows Media Player 10 and IPAQ 2495?? Hi again... Thanks to all who tried to help... the first responses lead me to conclude I needed a Hard Reset... which DID resolve my various problems... starting with Media Player and Sound. As to HOW to actually do a hard reset... Werner and William pointed me to the DocSets... same as my paper book... but it did NOT work. However, I scrolled to "Hard Reset" (near top of newsgroup)... and went thru 20-30 posts until I found one... by Lex Bolkesteijn... that worked... looks like the iPaq 2495 is different than the 2000-Series instructions... who'd a thunk??? Anyway, Lex's method is... Press and hold the power, calender and e-mail button . While doing that press, the soft-reset button, keep the power, calander and e-mail button pressed until the display lights up. Release buttons and a message "Formatting PS" will be displayed. You're done. So... again... thanks to all who cared about my problem... keep Lex's instructions in mind (for iPaq 2495 anyway)... and, hopefully, one day I can be good enough to help someone else! Just to follow-up on that - the hard-reset method supplied is the correct one, but the 2495 seems to have originally been supplied with WM2003 (or perhaps 2003SE). I suspect that the fact this one had been upgraded to WM5 caused the change in the reset procedure. I.e. with WM5, the persistent storage can override the older form of hard-reset. Hence most PPCs now have a "Clear Storage" facility to finish the job. -- WH |

| Re: Windows Media Player 10 and IPAQ 2495?? You can upgrade WM2003SE to WM5 using HP's official (commercial) WM5 upgrade. Note that, however, 1. it's far from perfect (REALLY buggy) and I would think twice before upgrading. 2. unlike with the more popular VGA models like the x51v and the hx4700, it has no home-made, "cooked" but, as they're still WM5, legal WM5 builds eliminating these bugs BTW, the 2495 is a WM5 model - it was never ever shipped with WM2003SE. | Re: Windows Media Player 10 and IPAQ 2495?? Hi Werner... I was trying to get a clarification from William's comments about WM2003, etc. As I said in first post... PPC newbie and was trying to solve a problem (did with lots of help from people like you)... but my last few posts were more of the "learning" variety... My unit is definitely a 2495... little sticker above battery door (on outside) says "Windows Mobile 5.0" and, under battery, it says "hx2495b". But got curious about his "upgrade" comment... so now wondering WHERE to get (for instance) WM 6.0... and HOW to install it... and, of course, how to backup WM 5.0 (in case of a problem). I guess my current questions are best served in a new thread (with the correct subject) now! Steve, my apologies, I think I have caused some confusion. The manual for the hx2000 series (downloaded from the HP web-site) is written for WM2003. I therefore assumed that the 2495 was a WM2003 device that had been upgraded to WM5. Of course it isn't. It seems that the earlier 2000 series models used WM2003 whilst the later models used WM5 (I'm unsure why HP didn't update the manual). Anyway, I have no knowledge of a WM6 upgrade for the 2495. The upgrade would normally have to come from the manufacturer, and they don't usually bother, In most cases, the simplest way to upgrade is to move to a new device. -- WH |

There's no WM6 upgrade for the hx2xxx series (or, for that matter, ANY HP devices). -- -- Werner "Menneisyys" Ruotsalainen - Microsoft MVP - Windows - Mobile Devices Please see the Pocket PC Mag Expert Blog (including mine) at http://www.pocketpcmag.com/blogs/ - you will definitely like it.
