enabling edge speed in gprs/3g phone (palm windows mobile 5 PPC- 750)

hi,

as the subject suggests, i am wondering if there is any way in which
my palm treo 750 windows mobile 5 pocket pc phone can be configured
(registry or any other way) to enable it to connect at edge speeds.
problem is networks in India do not provide 3g connectivity still and
thus edge is the highest speed available on the mobile networks.

please let me know if there is some 'hack' or something that can be
done to enable edge speeds on the phone.

thanks a lot,

Kunal

It's already capable. Most, if not all, 3G phones have Enhanced GPRS
(EDGE.)

However, many EDGE-capable phones give no visible indicator whether
they're connected at GPRS or EDGE speed- they simply use the fastest
connection available. The Treo falls in this category- even when
it's connected at EDGE, it displays GPRS.

hey thanks a lot.... that helps a lot..... !

one more question. though it doesnt fall in this post catagory.... if
you can help.... i have direct push enabled on the phone, so gprs is
on all the time. sometimes during phone calls, either direct push
doesnt synch (through active synch i.e.) or the gprs gets disconnected
after i disconnect the phone with the 'end' button. can you please
tell me why this happens and ofcourse how or what to do so that it
doesnt disconnect? because after everytime that it disconnects, i have
to go to active synch and press the 'synch' button so that gprs gets
reactivated and i remain up-to-date with the server...

thanks,

Kunal

It's normal to lose Push during a phone call on GPRS/EDGE, because the phone
can't do voice and data simultaneously. (3G can run simultaneous with
voice, but not GPRS/EDGE.)

How long do you wait? My phone usually reconnects in two or three minutes
after hanging up the phone. Even stranger, sometimes my phone doesn't show
the connected icon, but if I check Activesync, it does say "connected" under
"Microsoft Exchange."

Good luck!

Again, it depends on the technology used- the GPRS Blackberries
suspend e-mail during calls as well.

Re: enabling edge speed in gprs/3g phone (palm windows mobile 5 PPC- 750)

i cross checked how fast my phone reconnects... it seems to take a
longer time. actually when i read the posts again it was already
disconnected due a phone call received earlier, and checked after a
considerable amount of time (almost 10 minutes) and found out its
still not connected. so it seems there might be something wrong with
my ppc or some setting needs to be tweeked... any ideas????

kunal...

Still not connected according to the status icons, or not connected
according to Activesync itself? I don't pretend to know by what
method AS stays connected for Push e-mail to work, but my GPRS/EDGE
indicator can be off (no connection indicated) yet AS still says
Exchange is connected.

You might search the xda-developers site for registry tweaks to keep
GPRS connected, but I don't know any off the top of my head, sorry.

well my AS shows a "status" link stating that synch.. could not be
completed..
anyway will go thru the developers site for tweaks as you suggested...

thanks a lot.. :)
