| -> Synching with what apps? <- Hi, I'm coming from the Palm word and am thinking about switching to an HP iPaq. My question is: does it come with a Personal Information Manager I can synch to? Palm comes with Palm Desktop. But I'm not using Outlook, Outlook Express, Lotus Notes. None of them and don't want to. So what are my options regarding the desktop side of the PIM to be synched with an iPaq? If you don't want to use Outlook on your desktop, you will need to get a tool like http://www.laplink.com/pdasync/ that will sync with things like Act! or Lotus Organizer. There are no sync solutions that I know of that will let a Pocket PC sync with Palm Desktop. Way too many fields would be dropped. -- __________________________________________________ ________________________________ Ed Hansberry (Please do *NOT* email me. | Re: -> Synching with what apps? <- To expand slightly on Linley's and Ed's answers; >> and don't want to << We all understand that... but, using outlook (not sure if a free copy was included with your device) saves a lot of pain and suffering if you need the data on the pc... otherwise you can simply backup and use only the ppc or one of the other options suggested. >> Synching with what apps? << Beyond the pim data, any file format can be synced by simply placing it in the sync folder created when you check files in activesync. If there is a ppc app that opens those files, they are usable and will sync back if you edit them. a list of your needs and expectiations would help answer in this area. | Re: -> Synching with what apps? <- Thanks all. Actually, it seems that all Pocket PC PDAs come with a version of Outlook (desktop edition). I may give it a try. I didn't want to have to buy an extra product, especially an expensive one like Outlook, to just be able to have all my data (contacts, notes and todos) available on my PC. I used to like Outlook 98 and dislike the newer versions, but if this is the way to go, I'll go with Outlook. | Re: -> Synching with what apps? <- >> seems that all Pocket PC PDAs come with a version of Outlook << While that was the rule, HP broke it recently and stopped including it with new ppc's, so, I'm not sure if your's had it included. If it did, be sure to find and preserve the activation number and the original install cd... the number is required to install and the install on the cd is the only outlook install which will respond to that number. That means 300$ more for Outlook! >If it did, be sure to find and preserve the activation number and the >original install cd... the number is required to install and the install >on the cd is the only outlook install which will respond to that number. I don't have my PDA yet, still having a Palm OS one, and am thinking about switching. | Re: -> Synching with what apps? <- >> and am thinking about switching. << To quote bob... "come on down!" Check with HP and be sure to tell them that not including outlook would be a deal breaker, but, it may be a blessing in disguise as there are a lot of excellent ppc's out there which do include outlook in the price, and, imho, which are better than the equivalent hp's. HTC is a high flyer at the moment, but look around, post your wants and needs here and ask for input as you get close to a decision. One "heads up" ...a lot of "Windows Mobile" devices out there, but they are split between the "pocketpcs" and "smartphones" and, when shopping should know that the ppc's have much more functionality than the smartphones which are smaller and can be used singlehandedly. The clue is the stylus... if it has a stylus, it's a ppc, if not it's a smartphone. hth, Beverly Howard [MS MVP-Mobile Devices] |
