Long-Term Storage of PPC, battery issues?

I have more PPC's than I can use.
I wanna put a HP2200 in storage as a spare.
But there seems to be no way to turn it off.
Ok, I'll take out the battery and put it in the
fridge.
But there's a second lithium backup battery inside.

Lithiums don't recover from deep overdischarge.
Protection circuits even prevent charging overdischarged lithiums.
I suppose a weak backup battery is not a big deal. But depending
on how it's wired, it might prevent the system from booting???

Recommendations?
Thanks, mike

Re: Long-Term Storage of PPC, battery issues?

My understading is you can take out the main battery and the backup
battery to store it for a long period of time.

That having been said there are apparently issues with long term
storage and possible damage from moisture in the air, humidity,
and other damage that can occur from long term storage.

In theory it may be a nice idea to put these devices into
storagae for use in later years but big issue becomes how
do you store the thing without it getting damaged.

OK, got instructions on how to remove the backup battery without taking
it apart and unsoldering it?

I miscommunicated. By long-term storage,I meant longer than
it takes to ruin the battery when turned off. A month or more.

Re: Long-Term Storage of PPC, battery issues?

You don't need to be afraid of the second battery - even if it dies, the
system will boot up (it's just that you won't be able to swap batteries any
more.) Second, the 2210's built-in battery does die over time even without
permanently removing the battery (mine has also died on me.)

As a rule of thumb, store your MAIN battery at about 40% charge level as is
also explained at http://batteryuniversity.com/partone-12.htm (also several
times linked in from my battery & battery storage-related articles - they
are too worth reading.)

So you take it apart and unsolder it? No big deal.
Besides if you're putting it aside on a shelf for a
few years to use as a spare the Warranty will probably
have expired by the time you take it off the shelf.

By long term i'm referring to years where the device
will be on a shelf or in a closet as a spare for the
inevtiable day when the current device fails
and you need a spare but can't buy a new one since
it is out of production.
