| ex Palm owner wants Palm-like apps for PPC That's me. I have recently acquired an iPAQ 1950 to replace my Palm Tungsten and I'm not too impressed. I AM impressed with the wifi - much better than the Palm card - but want a Palm-alike 'Tasks' replacement. Something that will allow tasks to be date ordered, put in categories ('IT', 'Business', etc) and be prioritized (1-5). A notes ('Memo') prog with folders would be nice. What small idiot-proof programming language would you folk recommend if I need to make my own (I have BASIC and dBase skills )sort-of))? Any ex-Palm-people out there? Cheers EdW |

PocketInformant is one of the most popular PIM replacements and will do what you want, and then some. Other apps include Agenda Fusion and Agendus, though the latter just came to the Windows Mobile platform and hasn't caught up to PI and AF. -- __________________________________________________ ________________________________ Ed Hansberry (Please do *NOT* email me. Has worked for me, albeit with low resolutions (160x160). http://www.styletap.com/ Though I'm sticking with Palm. For now. Or what about using CASL? http://www.caslsoft.com/ I'm seriously considering getting an iPAQ 1950 specifically because the PPC network abilities far surpass the Palm, what don't you like about it - is it just that PPC is so far behind Palm when it comes to PDA usability (even though it is just as far ahead in other areas, like wifi) or is it the hardware itself? What is the battery life like? I've got a h5450 which makes a great browser and streaming media player, but I'm keeping my T3 for PDA stuff and video. The h5450 is just too big and clunky, and battery life is terrible. Does the 1950 address those issues? |

The 1950 - not a choice but a gift - surprised me by being smaller and lighter than the Palm (130 to 160g, naked). It relies heavily on the SD RAM slot to beef up the on-board 32MB. Windows usage and a desire to keep programs in RAM when 'off'. The h'writing recognition is back up to the old Graffiti standard that was wrecked in the later Palms with G2: this is the single most unproductive aspect of the later Palms and turned me against the marque. The sound quality is adequate and the voice recorder - its on the same menu as the Notes - is fine for quick notes. Its battery life is not great but it hasn't actually died on me through over-work, just my forgetfulness! Palm have that unfocussed end-of-the-line feeling about their development strategy. A bit like Psion before they threw in the towel. If I could find a Palm with Graffiti 1 on it and good built in wifi I'd be a happier man! Cheers EdW |

I could never figure out the draw of Graffiti. Years ago, I bought a Palm IIIx after owning a Phillips Nino for a year. The Nino had a hand recognition system that was completely natural. You wrote your letters the way you'd write them on paper. I think the program was called Jot, and I really liked it. The IIIx came with this steaming pile of road apples called Graffiti. I used it for maybe a month, or tried to. I hated it. It was the single most unintuitive piece of software I'd ever used. No-one writes like that. It was aweful. I was so close to throwing the Palm out the window before I discovered that Jot was also available on that platform. That was the IIIx's saving grace. So I applauded when Palm finally decided to get rid of their Graffiti software. I've been using Pocket PCs for a few years now, but I tried the new handwriting recognition on the newer Palm PDAs, and was pleased to see that they'd finally smartened up and replaced their Graffiti with something a lot more intuitive and user friendly. I could actually enter text error free on the TX without having to look at a chart or anything. brilliant. -- Posted via a free Usenet account from http://www.teranews.com |
