New PPC - Opinions?

Hi,

I've finally given up on Palm and am looking for recommendations for a
replacement PDA. I don't need it to be a phone, just a "simple" PDA. My
main uses are:

1. Calendar/Day Planner
2. Address Book
3. Reading ebooks (I don't mind the small screen but it has to be backlit
for reading in darkened rooms.)
4. A few simple instant-gratification games
5. Sync to Vista Home Premium via WiFi or USB link
6. Enough memory for a reasonable relational database system (<100K rows)
Also any recommendations for the DB application?

Web and/or email are of less importance since that is not what I usually
use the PDA for. Video and MP3 playback are of even less importance.

Thanks for whatever help you can give me.

- Dale

I'm very content with my HP Ipaq 4705. It's manufacturer discontinued, but
it is still supported and there are a few available on ebay.

Great screen
Oodles of memory if you include the Compact Flash slot and the SD slot
Excellent wi-fi connectivity.

Jason

Note that, however, its WM5 implementation is pretty lousy, even with
keeping in mind what I've explained in the hx4700 WM5 Upgrade Bible on my
blog. Sticking with WM2003SE, on the other hand, will mean you won't have
access to a lot of new apps (iPlay 5+, the Picsel, Deepfish and NetFront 3.4
Web browsers etc).

Re: New PPC - Opinions?

I have both the 2795 which has WM5 and the 4700 with PPC2003SE. The screen
on the 4700 is so much better, but I would advise the newer 2795 with the
new OS. Both have CF and SD slot so there is plenty of space to add music,
movies and pictures. Both have Bluetooth so I can use them both for
navigation. Both have integrated WiFi.

Re: New PPC - Opinions?

I like my 2795. I think the picture looks pretty good. It's pretty fast.
I can watch TV using my Slingbox on it and the picture is pretty good on
it's small screen. More then good enough for Games. I like playing Atomic
Cannon on it. I have my Local Weather forecast right on the today screen
showing today's and the next 2 days, but a click away for like 9 days.
Keeping track of my Appointments works good, and the #1 reason for getting
it was for Paperless GeoCaching. Works great for that also, and I can keep
100 times more places in it's Database or more then printing out places.
Plug in my GPS into the Compact flash port and I can go and hunt down the
caches. Or Car Navigation, though I still normally use my Garmin 2610. I
normally keep a 2 gig Card plugged in and there's still lots of room on it
after all the software I've installed, but I also have a 4 gig SD card to
use, I planned for using to throw video's on.

The only problem I've really come into is, well I tried watching my TV on it
using Sling Mobile, wireless(WiFi) and also using my Stereo Blue Tooth
Headset at the same time, but then I had problems with the sound cutting off
non stop. Had to go back to lessen using the little built in speaker
instead though I'm sure a wired headset would have been fine. Is using Blue
Tooth and Wifi at the same time a big drain on processing power? I thought
it was suppose to be fast. Just Sling Mobile loaded up. Will have to try
it again. Sounds so much better when using a stereo headset.
