I was just waching a video stream when the screen suddenly changed into a
blocked mosaic, then black.
When trying to reboot the notebook, the screen seems divided into two
halves, an upper and a lower half.
So now I see two bios password pronpts.
After entering the password, at first it seems to go on booting, but before
I get to the Vista logon screen it just reboots by itself and I get the
divided bois screen with password prompts again.

I suppose the videocard has died?

Could be the video card, LCD panel, or power regulators. It could even
be a loose plug. It is still under warrantee right? May work fine with
an external monitor. That still won't tell you what is wrong though.

Leave the machine cool -- completely -- and try again. If it's ok at
first but fails later, it may be overheating.

Laptops usually don't have videocards. So, for most practical purposes,
the more likely answer is that the motherboard has died.

I just tried that, but with an external monitor connected it won't boot at
all anymore: stone dead.

I should have stated: video-adapter.
After cooling down: still the same issue. Suppose its going to be a warranty
fight...

The **** thing seems to let me down after 19 months of cautious use!

In most cases the warranty is only 12 months, and from what you said,
you are well beyond that.

Not sure about elsewhere, but in the US, if it was purchased with any of a
variety of credit cards, you get an additional warranty of double the mfg.
warranty up to an additional year of coverage.

Nope. The video card has gone into a mode that is not compatible with the
screen. Its compatible enough that the screen is interpreting the output,
hence displaying it doubled.

Press F10 while booting and select VGA mode. You can then set the correct
video mode from the display properties screen (Right click in desktop and
select the 'Apperance' tab in case you don't know.

Afraid this doesn't work. Screen displays trash and can't select anything.

Unless I'm misreading the OP he said the glitch appears when he first
powers up the computer at the BIOS password screen which is long
before any windows drivers come into play.
