Best Buy ... ALL computers GONE; Dell XP only

Was in a local Best Buy store last night. They have removed ALL
computers, both laptop and desktop, for upgrade to Vista. They have a
sign apologizing for no stock available on anything, and advising people
to come back on Tuesday, January 30th.

Apparently, it's too late to get a computer with XP. Dell is also
sending out a notice saying that they have completely converted to Vista
already. On a few high-end models for business customers, XP is still
available by special order. On consumer models, including Inspiron
laptops, XP is gone, period. Can't even be special ordered. Vista only
from now on (and actually apparently this was effective a few days ago).

XP, RIP

Re: Best Buy ... ALL computers GONE; Dell XP only

you know a store doing that is really stupid, you would think they would
hold back a few for a person that may need a system now. Get vista later or
whatever. I should take a ride up to my local BB and tell them I need 10
systems for my business right now. Just to F with them.
I hate BB for what it is worth they overcharge, example: dvi cable for a
monitor 50 dollars.
Sam's Club 14 dollars, what's with that.

Just for the record the Fry's Electronics 8 page ad on Friday showed
every desktop and notebook computer in the ad still available with
various versions of XP. The one page ad in Saturday's paper showed 2
notebooks with Vista and everything else still with XP.

Now as to whether those computers are actually still in stock is
another thing. :-)

I was in Best Buy here last night myself and got the opposite answer, lol.
That's the problem with BB, you get different answers from sales people that
may or may not know what they're talking about. When I inquired why the 15"
Toshiba was the only laptop they had on display, I was told they were just
out of stock, lol.

My desktop got fried by a power surge or something (even though it was on a
surge protector) so now I'm looking to replace my desktop with a new, better
laptop. I'm interested in the 15" Acer but nobody seems to have any in
stock. Every Circuit City in my area has none in stock and the BB selection
stinks too.

Seems the Dell website also only has Vista, as I went to 2 different
variations of the Dell site and only found home and office versions of Vista
and no XP. Do I smell a conspiracy? JK JK

Chris;

Staples this week has 15" Acer laptops on sale for $549 and if you look you
can find a $30 coupon online.

Good luck!!

Thanks, I'll see if my local Staples has any in stock tomorrow. The thing
is, the Acer looks good, but I want to actually see one before buying. I
found the one I'm looking for, for $849 on their web site, but since they
may have sent them all back to install Vista, the problem may be the same as
CC and BB, finding one in a store. But thanks a lot for the Staples
information, I hadn't even considered them and they may be cheaper than
either BB or CC.

Chris;

Good luck finding the Acers. I wanted to add my opinions of these
laptops... I have purchased three for my own family so far and each person
likes them a lot. As a "windows" laptop they do everything all the other
seem to do. Where I work they tried a few Acer laptops and have now
switched from Dell to Acers. Cheaper, better availability for similar
configs. If you look you can purchase with either Intel OR AMD processors
and either single or dual core CPU's. In fact, they even have a laptop
model with a 20" screen if that's what you need.

Understand, though, that for approx $500 don't expect this (or any brand) to
be the last laptop you will ever need to buy. However, the reliability
I've experienced will outpace the changes in technology.

Good luck.

Thanks for the opinion, I appreciate it. I found out my local CC has some in
stock, but apparently not on display for some reason. I think I'll go in
there on Tuesday and ask if I can see one anyway before buying as well as
Staples. I built a system almost like the Acer at the Dell site and it cost
me double the amount of the Acer, so I think I'm going to go with them. The
thing I appreciate most about the Acer is that while it "only" comes with 1
GB RAM, it's expandable to 4 GB, which is great.
