Thanks, I'll try another brand of disk -- yeah rewritables so I don't
make coasters!

try burning something else on those DVDs,
to make sure they are 100% compatible with that machine

yes, and try some other DVD brand also

worst case, you can buy the Recovery Discs from HP?

in the meantime, you have the Recovery Partition

DO NOT use rewriteables. Even if you get a seemingly good one, they
have poor long term stability and may "fade" over time.

But do try a different brand of media. And if your burner supports both
+ and - formats, try the other format.

This sounds like either a media or a burner problem. You want to find
out which, because if it's a burner problem, it may require drive
replacement.
