| Mechanical disassembly of HP laptop I dropped my dv2000t Pavilion laptop and now the dvd tray won't open. Maybe I need to replace the tray. I need to take the laptop apart and I wonder does anybody know where there are instructions on disassembly of the laptop. Also, how can I buy parts to replace broken parts? TIA Bill S. |

A good idea is to take a look into a repair shop. Sometimes the folks there are friendly and give you some hints. Also, you perhaps could find spare part or order them there. Ordinary people have problems in getting spare parts. So you need a dealer for them... |

Here is the maintenance and repair guide, which has photographic disassembly guides, and parts lists. The good thing about HP is that you can order any parts provided you have the part numbers. http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01035657.pdf |

| Re: Mechanical disassembly of HP laptop For HP, there is a fair chance you can find the service manual online; if not, look at www.irisvista.com (although they are bigger on Toshiba). I don't know what your background is but for the most part, if people without laptop service training (even people who know how to work on desktops) take apart a laptop, they ruin it and it never works again. Just keep that in mind. Usually, the optical drive can be removed without total disassembly. The drive isn't made by HP, it's a Teac or Panasonic or Acer or {whoever} drive. If you can't fix it, you can usually replace it. You may have to move the mounting brackets, faceplate and connector adapter (if any) from the broken drive to the replacement. Also, most HP laptops require an optical drive with "cable select". The choice betweeen master / slave / cable select is usually not user configurable, so keep this in mind. bilsch wrote: > I dropped my dv2000t Pavilion laptop and now the dvd tray won't open. > Maybe I need to replace the tray. Also, how can I buy parts to replace broken parts? > Turn the laptop over. On the base you will see various screws marked by variouis symbols. The screw you are looking for has a CD disk like symbol, but it will be central to the disk drive and about 6 inches or so from the edge of the laptop. Remove it. Now the hard part, because you have to open the DVD drive drawer by poking a straightened paperclip through the little hole. You can then use the tray to ease the drive out of the laptop. The problem here is that if you cannot open the tray you will not be able to do this and serious disassembly is required. Fortunately HP publish the service manuals for their laptops on their site at: www.hp.com |

HP are notorious for dumping their entire stock of parts once the warranty period on the last machine sold is likely to have passed. |

Got to page 5-22. Except the OP can't carry out step 3 - which is why he wants to replace the drive in the first place. Without that step the drive cannot be removed as per the instructions. |

If the tray is still jammed, an x-acto blade could be used to pry the whole drive far enough from the chassis to allow a screwdriver to pry it further, until it can be gripped and pulled out. The drive is free to slide when the screw, item 1, is removed. |
