CD/DVD LOAD CAUSES ALL MEDIA PROGRAMS TO FREEZE

I have tried system restore, apple reinstall,itunes revert, itunes 9
update, etc. no luck
1. Program X running. (Itunes, WMP, Advanced Disc Catalog,etc)
2. I load blank CD, or dvd movie,
3. All applications freeze, barring browsers.
4. I X out program, dble click to open same program
5. program X sees CD DVD, and plays, imports, burns, just fine.

WHAT THE HELL?

ps, i JUST tried to cataloge a DVD in Disc Movie Manager program. The
drive spun, whined, rev'd. I eject DVD, and the ENTER MOVIE TITLE
window popped up. ???

I'll take a stab at it and say that your DVD drive has an unrecoverable
fault leaving the system in a state of permanent interrupt waiting for
data from the drive or the drive to release the interrupt, which usually
takes microseconds, but is now locked in the interrupt state, until you
eject and the drive's firmware resets all interrupts and flags upon
eject.

While the system was held in this long interrupt, all kinds of processes
went crazy backing up timed processes that, now released, could do all
kinds of crazy things, like popup the movie title window.

These machines are all interrupt driven and not truly multitasking. You
can see this when you have it heavily loaded with video or gaming and
something called on the hard drive for data making the picture balk for
just an instant until the drive responded....same thing but not
permanently long.

I strongly suspect a bad optical drive.

thank you guys for taking the time to respond in such detail.

I'm wondering if there's some auto-read trigger or mechanism that has
been mis tripped or damaged. The Drive still imports music and burnS
dvd's FINE. yOU JUST have to have disc in the drive and THEN open
application.

Temporarily ruling out "bad optical drive," what does one do to
resolve a "unrecoverable fault" or error caused by irregular interrupt
phenomena?
