chipset UXGA, cable SXGA and screen XGA only?

In the laptop there is SXGA screen connector, but so far there sat XGA
screen. So I wanted to change the screen to higher resolution SXGA but
then it doesn't work!
2 different products of SXGA screens were tried and although the
backlight was on no picture was generated. After connecting back to
XGA screen everything was OK again.
The mainboard with integrated graphics should support even UXGA
according to specs. Also according to the manual screen resolution is
optional (optional are versions of the laptop's model).

So where is the source of problem? How to overcome obstacles?
Thanks a lot in advance!

If you want to watch a resolution that exceeds the resolution of
your laptop's screen, you need to switch to 'external monitor
only'. Your manual will show you how.
(In rare situations, you may even need to allocate more RAM to
the display system.)

You have understood me wrong. I was going to replace laptop's screen
with a model of higher resolution (SXGA) because I knew all needed
hardware is already in place. The problem was in practical
implementing it.

Re: chipset UXGA, cable SXGA and screen XGA only?

Connectors (and video cards and video chips) and cables are not
"resolution specific". They will ALL do multiple resolutions, accepting
that video cards (even if implemented as part of a chipset or on a
laptop motherboard) do have a maximum resolution. And so do SOME types
of interfaces (e.g. a single channel DVI interface (which would apply to
the cable and connector) has a maximum resolution; but I don't think
that's your problem).

You need to be more specific about what laptop you are dealing with.
Some laptops cannot be set to a resolution higher then that of their
internal screen, or doing some may require some form of "applied black
magic". This can have as much to do with the windows drivers as with
the hardware.

Re: chipset UXGA, cable SXGA and screen XGA only?

If a given laptop model was offered with two different screens, and you
have the model with one resolution, you should not assume that you can
swap screens to the other resolution (regardless of which way you are
going). In some cases it may work, but in other cases there are
differences on the motherboard that you don't know about, and which
perhaps could not be changed even if you did know about them.

But please, let us be more specific and precise! This newsgroup is
technical one and there is no place to disseminate superstitions :>
If there is a ribbon with SXGA plug already in place, but having only
XGA screen connected (only in this version of the laptop model), and
also there is a chipset of integrated graphics that supports even
UXGA, then what peculiarities in mainboard could exist which didn't
allowed for SXGA?
If we are technical then maybe these obstacles could be managed in
some smart way, couldn't they?
