| Windows 7 Upgrade Question This may not be the best group to post this in, but ..... Windows 7 comes out 10/22. Probably not news to anyone. From now until July 11th, a few places are participating in a Microsoft "pre-order" program where you can buy a copy at a VERY steep discount (50% to 70% off; $49 for the $119 Home Premium Upgrade, for example). Ships on 10/22. So I went to www.BestBuy.com/Windows7preorder to place an order, and there are two SKU's ... Home Premium and Business. Shouldn't there be four SKUs? -Home Premium 32-bit -Home Premium 64-bit -Business 32-bit -Business 64-bit ??? [Or does each package possibly include both, but you can use one or the other?] |

A: You’ll get both. Windows 7 Home Premium and Professional packaged products include both 32- and 64-bit discs. One of the other questions includes the link to the upgrade adviser. Aaron |

| Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Question This is not a beta test program, it has nothing to do with beta testing or beta testers. It's available right now to anyone at Best Buy and at Newegg (and about 6 other places). The discount is HUGE ($49 instead of $119) and it is ONLY available until July 11th. Funny running beta rock solid for 4 months not a hitch, how bout that. RC goes on tomorrow as the beta license will start nagging then. |

I was going to buy my new 17" laptop early with Vista installed and then get the free W7 upgrade. But after thinking about it awhile I believe I will wait and get it with W7 installed. It may save me a few upgrade headaches. Course if any fantastic laptop deals come along before then I may opt for the headaches... ;) |

Hopefully the UPGRADE experience is an aesy process. |

We won't know till 4Q09 or 1Q10 if W7 will be a success. I played with a W7 Beta and some of my old favorite applications would not install. If this is the norm on GA code MSC may be creating another ME/Vista once again. It's bad enough customers have to buy the same old Windows OS over and over again, but if they have to do the same with application software they will not be happy. This is why I run Linux 99% of the time on all my hardware. |

This is contradictory. Anyway, since you only run 1 in 100 apps in Windows you 1. Know nothing about it and 2. Don't need it anyway. |

| Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Question Vista is not one MS' greatest OS', but it's no ME, either. It's not THAT bad. Re: "We won't know till 4Q09 or 1Q10 if W7 will be a success." I have to disagree on that, I think we know the answer to this now. The experience with the beta versions of W7 has been so overwhelmingly positive ... and I mean across the board, by pretty much all reviewers in pretty much all regards ... that it's safe to conclude that W7 will be a success. As to compatibility issues, there will always be some of those, but I think that more things will install under W7 than under Vista, and that is "natively", but for W7 Business & Ultimate, the option of "XP Mode" also exists. I disagree. You are viewing it as a consumer not a corporate IS manager. If you are an IS manager in a large company and have to buy you favorite application time 100K, because it doesn't run of W7, then you will not upgrade. This is what happened with Vista. Large companies cannot afford to spend that kind of money in todays environment. Lets face it MSC make their big bucks from the large spenders, not individual folks. When the large companies world wide upgrade to W7, then it's a success. Many companies and governments in Europe (especially Germany) have dropped MSC in favor of Linux. It will be tough for MSC to even meet and exceed the success of XP. Time will tell. |

Sounds like you never recompiled your own Linux kernel like you are supposed to do for security updates. As if you did, you would find that this breaks many of your Linux applications. So many Linux users never update their OS with security updates. And I have Xandros, Ubuntu, and Puppy Linux and not a single application is available for these distros that I find useful. Although on the Windows side, everything that I ever want or need for the past 10 years runs under 2000/XP. Linux can't even keep my interest for a whole day, let alone for 10 years. I just checked the Ubuntu Synaptic package handler. It says there are 26000+ packages available for installation. Of those several thousand are applications. Perhaps you are a bit too picky??... ;) >Linux can't even keep my interest for a whole day... OSs of course are a personal preference. But like warm beer you might warm (pun intended) to Linux if you used it more often. With two OSs on the *same* Eee PC you could make a good comparison. You could try dual booting Linux with XP on your Eee PC as I do. That way you can have the best of both worlds. But wait, with those dinky SSDs of yours that would be difficult wouldn't it... ;) |
