Xandros users can test the built in webcam, but can't use it for
anything. Playing media files is awful. You have to make the window
small enough so Linux can keep up with it. Then the stock system is
limited to 1GB anyway.

I had Ubuntu Live installed on one of my SD cards and running it toasted
my Windows XP system. I couldn't believe it. So I restored Windows XP
from a backup and tried it two more times and it toasted those too. As
it causes iband.dll toolbar to hang the desktop at boot and all you
would see was Windows Installer window at boot and it would sit there
forever.

Ran it on my Xandros machine and it didn't toast that one. But no
wireless, no sound, thus no good for anything. Ran Puppy Linux for the
EeePC too. Max screen brightness at boot and no WiFi was a turn off for
me.

Picky? Of course I am picky. I want a computer to do the jobs I want
done, not what joe blow down the street wants done. As I need my devices
to work with it. Like my VTech VoIP, Palm, Medisense meter, flight
controller, TV card, etc. Linux is virtually worthless in this area. As
you can have the greatest OS in the world, but it isn't any good if it
doesn't run the applications you want to run.

Remember I have two 8G machines and I now have two other SSD to play
with. One is a 4G MLC and the other is a 16G MLC. I don't like MLC
because they don't last as long as SLC types (SLC type lasts 10 times
longer). But these two are cheap enough to beat up and I can see how
long they will put out. <grin>

Dual boot? You really like this? At first I thought it was great, but I
quickly resented it. As the odd ball OS (other than 2000 or XP) I found
I couldn't work 24/7 in. So rebooting to back to Windows was a real pain
in the butt to me. What is truly better is having multiple computers and
having their own OS on them. Then you can truly compare the two. Side by
side, so to speak.

Warm beer? I lived with my great grandfather for a summer after my great
grandmother died when I was a teenager. He worked me hard and after a
long day, he would give me a warm beer. He was born in Germany and I
guess they grew up that way. So yes, I can drink beer either icy cold or
warm as well. I still like cold beer better, but warm beer is still ok
too. <grin>

Best of both worlds? I have the best of multiple worlds with multiple
computers, do I not? <grin>

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Question

I have EEEbuntu installed on my Asus EEEpc models 702 and 1000he.

http://www.eeebuntu.org/index.php?page=nbr

It works great. The REMAX version is very similar to the Xandros Asus
install.

EEEbuntu is a version of UBUNTU. I can install almost application
imaginable. I have Wine (Crossover) also installed and I can run MS
Office 2003 and tons of other native Windows applications.

Hi Clay! Looks interesting, but there is no webcam support from what I
can see. I don't really use it, but someday I will and I want it
available. Nor does many Linux IM applications support the webcam
either. But they are plentiful on the Windows side.

Wine? Wine claim to fame was running MS Office. And MS Office is easy to
run under an emulator like Wine. My big beef with emulators are you
generally need a super computer, or you suffer performance loss. Do you
notice this under Wine too?

And what about drivers? For example my Palm Desktop syncs with my Palm
through an USB to RS-232 cable. Windows needs a driver to make it work.
My guess is that Wine won't work with this driver. My guess is that it
won't work with my VTech VoIP phone either. Windows 2000 won't work with
the VTech as well, it has to be Windows XP or later. Although I have
been tempted to copy the stock XP USB audio drivers over to Windows 2000
and to see if this will work. <grin>

Re: Windows 7 Upgrade Question

EEEubuntu was re-written for EEEpc with all hardware drivers. I have the
built in camera working on both my EEEpc's (702 and 1000he). I use them
for Skype Videos all the time with my EEEpc's. Just download the latest
level.

Wine or crossover is not an emulator. It was written to convert all
Windows application calls to run on Linux. Windows applications are
written to call built in Windows Application DLL calls. I have been
using in Linux for years with Crossover (wine).

On my Big Linux system I also have VMware running. I have Windows
95,98,99,ME, 2000,XP, Vista, Windows 7 Beta all running on Linux VMware.
If I want to run a native Windows application all I have top bring up is
one on my VMware Windows Systems. I have them pre-configued with Windows
application which do not run in Crossover(wine). I see no need to ever
run native Windows. I even have my big Linux Quad Core system dual boot
with Apple OSX. Vmware cost $$ you can download a free Virtual System
for Linux from SUN FREE!!!

http://www.sun.com/software/products/virtualbox/get.jsp

I have been running in this environment since about 2001 on my big Linux
System. I have used many different motherboards and Linux Distributions
since about 1999.
