| usb tv tuner I am looking for opinions on a usb tv tuner to go with my netbook. The one I am looking at the most is an Artec T19ARD. What are others using on their net/notebooks ? Here is a url for one. http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/Produc...dlist=celebros |

It runs so hot you can't hold it in your hand. It kills a full sized laptop battery in 40 minutes, rendering it useless for watching TV unplugged. Don't buy a Hauppauge...it's crap! Run whatever TV USB adapter you like for 60 minutes. Buy the one that gets least warm and return the others to the store as crap.... The coolest one uses the least battery power....longest runtime. -- ----- Larry If a man goes way out into the woods all alone and says something, is it still wrong, even though no woman hears him? |

| Re: usb tv tuner Be careful; NTSC is dead, and many (most? virtually all?) of the USB tv tuners require a tremendous amount of decoding to be done by the CPU, and have a minimum CPU requirement that is WAY above ANY CPUs present in any netbooks. I have a Hauppauge 950Q, and it's fine for laptops that have enough CPU to process the data, but the spec, at least, is a 1.8GHz Centrino MINIMUM just to watch, and to record, a dual core. Also keep in mind that you need to deal with 3 different standards: NTSC ("old TV" ... now dead for over the air broadcasting, but still used for some analog channels on some cable systems, and as an output from VCRs and DVD players) ATSC (aka over-the-air digital TV broadcasting) QAM (Digital TV transmission (HD or not) over cable systems) Ideally you want a device that can receive all 3 formats (which the 950Q definitely can). I really should try the 950Q on my Acer Aspire One. Even thought the specs are not met (or even close), it might work. I do like how it works on my Toshiba full size Core 2 Duo laptop, but I have just assumed that it would not work on the netbook. | Re: usb tv tuner The mfgrs link for the Artec card is here: http://www.artec.com.tw/ehtm/products/t19ar.htm functionally and externally, it looks like the Hauppauge unit (mine also gets hot, but not so hot that you can't hold it). But the specs on the Artec unit suggest lower requirements from the host computer. As to power consumption, the maximum you can draw from a USB port is 2.5 watts (5 volts at 500ma), which is 250 mah from a 10 volt battery. That is about 7% of the capacity of a typical laptop battery, so it shouldn't "kill" the battery life, although it's certainly not going to help it. In any case, I have always presumed that watching TV was a "plugged in" activity, which does not mean that there might not be times when you might like to do it on battery. ATSC TV will NOT sync in a moving vehicle, no matter who makes it...even if you're staring at the tower! Stop at light...picture and sound come on perfect....Get up to 5mph pulling away from light, picture locks until you stop again. Digital TV in the USA is NOT mobile...I think on purpose! Isn't it a coincidence as soon as sellphone companies started selling mobile TV for big profits, over-the-air free TV stops working in mobile vehicles? | Re: usb tv tuner I hate to put a damper on your conspiracy theories, but ATSC was designed in the late 1980's and early 1990's. I don't think that their impact on cell phones played any part whatsoever. The "digital transition" that occurred last week was, at one time, scheduled to have occurred in 1997. This system took a LONG time to get born. WAY too long for it's design to have been influenced by concerns for ATSC's impact on 3G cell phone video in 2009. That may be the spec..but... I have an external usb hard drive. It reports to the system that it draws 100mA, but it trips the current limit when simultaneously hooked to TWO usb ports. The drive itself is rated at 750mA. Bottom line is that I don't think you can rely on the vendor to adhere to the usb spec if it kills their product. YMMV. , which is 250 mah from a 10 volt battery. Not sure that you are right because my Aldi USB digital TV unit works just fine on my ASUS 1000H Netbook, I will admit I have not tried recording though. Cheers. Pete |

| Re: usb tv tuner I didn't say ALL; but most of these devices use one of a small number of chips and, in fact, many of them are identical. My comments can only be strictly construed to apply to the Hauppauge 950Q. But the specs for many (MANY; not ALL) other devices are similar and, as I noted, many of them use the same chip(s) inside. I did a search for Aldi and it seems that most of the hits I found on Google was for another country. If not what Aldi USB tuner modle are you using ? | Re: usb tv tuner Aldi is a German retailer (there could be another, unrelated Aldi as well). Interestingly, they have a few US retail stores (Supermarkets) in a few parts of the US (not widespread I don't think, but definitely some in Ohio and PA and I think other parts of the NE and midwest as well). Although it's a supermarket, they sell some strange stuff (for a supermarket) at times, including computers among other things. Yes, in the supermarket. Yes, in > the supermarket. Yes, Barry we have an Aldi a few miles form my house here in North Carolina. I do not think I have ever been in there. I am thinking they do or used to do some strange things such as having to have a quarter to put into a slot to get a buggy for the grocerys and you get it back when you bring it back. Atleast one store of somekind does from a report from the men at work. All the Google places I looked at were outside the US and that does not do me any good. That is why I wasnted teh specific modle number to see if it was a US or another country he was using the Aldi in. |

So if you want to steal an Aldi's cart, it will cost you 25¢. Pain in the butt if you don't have a quarter on you though, even if you just want to shop there. <sigh> -- Bill Windows XP Home SP3 (5.1.2600) Asus EEE PC 702G8 ~ 2GB RAM ~ 16GB-SDHC |

So if you want to steal an Aldi's cart, it will cost you 25¢. The purpose of requiring a coin for cart isn't actually to decrease temptation to steal carts but to encourage customers to bring carts back to their place, instead of just abandoning them at parking lot after use. The coin wouldn't be worth the cart, but it's more likely worth the bother to bring the cart back. P.V. |
