Will Windows 7 be a laptop upgrade nightmare?

Most laptops come with a lot of hardware specific drivers and software
installed by the manufacturer that work with the installed OS. In my
case it's Vista on an HP tablet entertainment notebook. What I wonder
about is how will I be able to upgrade it to Windows 7 if HP decides not
to provide updated drivers and software for Win 7?

I am running the Windows 7 release candidate (build 7100) on my 8
month old HP DV5 1000us notebook (for reasons I won't go into) and
have had no problems. One driver, for the HP Officejet 4200 series
printer, was not available in the build but the OS automatically
searched online for the driver when I tried to add the printer, and
found and installed it in about 2 minutes.

According to reports Windows 7 is compatible with Vista drivers.

Windows 7 is backwards compatible so will (should?) run anything that
Vista will.

And apparently W7 will even run on older computers than yours, for
example this one manufactured in 2001, though with some difficulty...

That's a relief. My notebook is of the same series as yours, I
think: HP Pavillion tx1410us. Did you install W7 on top of Vista, or did
you do a clean install?

Since it is the release candidate, fresh install is the only option.

When you decide to move to Windows 7, I would recommend getting
Acronis Backup (or equivalent), back up your important data and
applications, do a fresh install of W7, then restore your data and
applications.

Re: Will Windows 7 be a laptop upgrade nightmare?

I think that in the end, most Vista drivers will work with Windows 7.

I upgraded my HP tx21xx series tablet from Vista to W7 RC. You don't need a
clean install. Most of the features I use work fine; only the autorotate
isn't quite right.

I have had to do a bit of searching to get my 1000H running with Win7
because there are not Vista drivers provided by ASUS but with a little
perseverance it all works well, I do have 2Gb of RAM though.

I installed W7 beta on a Dell D620 and all drivers (including wireless)
were installed. W7 performed like a champ...(cant believe I said that).

I am going to install the RC this weekend.

Jed,
Its fantastic that you are enjoying Windows 7 so much and that you had a great experience finding the drivers needed for your printer and other devices. Windows 7 offers many great features which I am sure you are discovering! To learn more about Windows 7 and some great tips / tricks, check out Microsoft Springboard.
Also, side note to any user still running Windows 7 Beta, remember the Beta will begin to reboot every two hours starting July 1st. If you have not moved to the Win7 Release Candidate, please do so here: Windows 7 Release Candidate

I have and use Acronis for partition backups but moving apps from a
backup to a new Win7 installation is not as simple as you make it
appear. An installed app has files in different directories, plus
registrry entries. Those things are not as easily transplantable as an
original app install with the usual installation wizard. Copying over
HP-provided special drivers that operate the webcam, touch pad and other
special laptop hardware is likely just as or more complex. At least
that's how I visualize it.

Why not wait a year for the really gross bugs to be found by the users
before jumping headlong into the same hole that Vista became.

Wouldn't that make better sense?

No Vista here....It never got out of "user beta"!

Applications really are not meant for migration to a new OS, although
MSFT should allow you to transfer profile specific application data &
settings.

So far laptop drivers have NOT been an issue with W7 in the HP and Dell
I tested (all were present and installed).

Keep in mind that MS knows it has to hit it out of the park on this one.
But time will tell.

Absolutely. I cannot begin to understand why users would rush to a new
OS, unless they have a specific need that would fulfilled and that is
not presently.

This makes sense from people who, somehow need to get familiar with all
new OSs coming on the market, for professional reasons. Otherwise, as
long as you are happy with you presently system, just do yourself a
favor, save some money, save time and keep it. If you cannot resist the
urge, make sure you can revert simply to your present OS ...
I believe Windows 7 will not bring anything important to Vista users: it
looks much more attractive for people who decided to stay put with XP
and need/want to upgrade.
