| Sudden vanishing of the sound Hello group I would like to know what are the main reasons for the sounds or audio to vanish from a PC. I just experienced it right now. When I played one flash video file, there was a sound and suddenly it just disappeared. I checked the sound volume and it was in highest level...? |

Things I would try are: 1) Reboot the computer 2) System Restore (Accessories -> System Tools) -- Bill Asus EEE PC 701G4 ~ 2GB RAM ~ 16GB-SDHC Windows XP SP2 |

Hell, no! This is a solution of last resort, with no predictable results in sight. Taking a look at System, Hardware, Device Manager is the first thing to do if rebooting did not solve the problem. Reinstalling/update the drivers related to the sound will take care of your problem unless some hardware problem appeared, which might show on Device Manager. Using System Restore is very dangerous, and chances are you will end up with a machine different from the one you had before. Trying to isolate the problem is the way to go. Going to Control Panel, Sound, Sound and making sure your sound scheme is correct is also necessary before resorting to more dramatic steps. In other words, I believe in understanding what happened unless it prove to elusive. But always keep in my mind that system restore is a risky procedure. -- John Doue |

I have had mostly good experiences with System Restore and few bad ones. And I also forget that not all people make backup copies of their system. I do on most of my systems. And the ones that I don't, doesn't really matter since they are spares anyway. So when one of the few times System Restore doesn't save your butt, it was worth a try anyway before you restore from your backup copy. -- Bill Asus EEE PC 701G4 ~ 2GB RAM ~ 16GB-SDHC Windows XP SP2 |

I rebooted it but did not sort the problem , but, As this is a laptop connected to a docking facility...I remove that dock and the problem just sorted by itself.. This s something surprising why a port replicator or a dock would affect it suddenly after a long time of usage..... Roy |

I am still trying to sort out the problem why when I changed the hard drive of that notebook, the audio portreplicator is not working normally,i. e its external audio speakers remains silent... .. I think there was a post aboutt this several weeks ago ,,,but after all the suggestions I still have not been able to retrieve the normal operating conditions of this notebook connected to its audio dock.... Therefore this led me to think that the original HDD might t have the missing drivers and software that was not completely transferred to the new drive as I was ,just loading the drivers and not the wares that might be responsible for this, ..... or it has a sort of a security lock to prevent it being copied to another drive? I was wondering if I mirror the image of that older drive to this new one ,would it return the full functionality of this port replicator..... |

Hi Roy! What kind of laptop and audio port replicator is it again? Is the port replicator built into the docking station, or is it separate? Maybe with all of the help here, somebody might be able to find the drivers you need. Many here are very resourceful. <grin> And yes, imaging the old drive should work too. Another idea is to use one of those driver backup programs. DriverBackup! (free) http://sourceforge.net/projects/drvback/ Driver Magician ($29.95) http://www.drivermagician.com/ Driver Genius ($29.95) http://www.driver-soft.com/ I never got DriverBackup to work right. Maybe you will have better luck. Although I do use the other two. -- Bill Asus EEE PC 701G4 ~ 2GB RAM ~ 16GB-SDHC Windows XP SP2 |

Actually its a port replicator.. The unit is similar to this http://www.productreview.com.au/show...p?item_id=4726 As I am relocated overseas in Asia now I can't go back to the reseller for advice nor contact the original service center where I have it checked before. The Sony Service center in my location does not know how toservice this unit....sigh.. Its the only problem I am having right now with this port replicator thingy after I replaced the hard drive. I have checked the device manager and so far all the drivers were loaded and updated.... I am still pondering how to get this sorted out so that the Pc performance will be back to normal. Roy |
