Sony Vaio PCG-7Z1M Booting Problem.

Hello

When switched on a screen comes up with

Windows Error Recovery
Launch Startup Repair (Recommended)
Start Windows normally

I enter the repair mode.
Windows is loading files....then
Microsft Corporation log (with scrolling bar above)
then blank screen.

The hard disc light flashes every 5-10 seconds.

I would be grateful for any advice please.

Regards, Hugh

Well under Windows XP Recovery Console, it stays there for awhile. Not 5
minutes, but it seems like it take that long sometimes. Are you sure you
are waiting long enough?

15 minutes plus. Hard disc light stopped flashing. Not doing anything
now.

Sounds like one of the driver/dll files is trashed by a defective hard
drive sector. Reinstall Windows from its backup and see if it recovers it.

Wait a minute! Reinstalling Windows is not the way to find/correct
defective sectors!

Boot from a CD containing hard disk utilities. I personally use Hiren's CD.

This disk contains a variety of lifesaving utilities. It is probably
not quite "cosher" but it saves your life in such situations. You also
need to check the boot.ini file from the root directory and make sure it
contains only the info needed to start windows normally.
