| 4200 vs 5400 HDD I am planning to buy another desktop replacement system and just noticed lately that some high end notebooks for multimedias are fitted with 4200 rpm hard drive which to my understanding is slower than the 5400 rpm. One example is the SONY VAIO FW series. I understand that the lower speed harddrive does not not suck to much power but for such notebooks, battery juice is seldom relied as its too short and rather weak for such strenous application, then what its the logic of fitting in such slower hard drive when the best should be higher speeds such as 7200 rpm? What are the other significant advantage for such 'turtle drives'<grin> when higher speed should be the trend today? Would it be a sound investment for a notebook to have such as slower drive? And yes I do see a big speed improvement. The slower the CPU, the bigger the improvement. I never bought a 7200rpm drive for a laptop, but my guess it would be great too. Although hard drives are old technology which is about 25 years old. Have you thought about SSD (solid state drives)? As I am sold on the technology and I use them all of the time. I do not think HD speeds could overwhelm a motherboard of today's laptops ... at least within the scale we know today! I do not believe either the difference in power consumption would be really perceptible, at least with quality HD. The only thing you may really notice if you go toe 7200rpm is vibrations and noise, and that, I would really mind. -- John Doue |

My 5,400 in a ThinkPad already hits 58 degrees C on the office desk, on a warm spring day. Operateing specs for the HDD are 0 - 60 degrees. It hovered around mid 30s, it hit 40C only once, during a defrag. However, I got my hands on an R40 with a 1400x1050 panel in it and, after several unsuccessful attempts at swapping the panel into the R51 (I don't know, all I know is that [now I've looked] ThinkWiki show that the R40 and the R51 didn't have a single panel in common in any model, I guess the pin-out is different even though the connector fits). So I decided to keep the R40 as the panel really is great, I gave up faster RAM speed and a superior CPU (Dothan for Banias) of the R51 for this wonderful panel but now am finding the HDD running over 15C hotter. I've tried running it without the caddy cover on, very little difference... I think it's just the design of the R40. I'd fit a blower fan aimed into the HDD area but the handiest USB port is right there... I considered a bigger drive but then Seagate don't go bigger than 160Gb on PATA and I like the 5 year warranty. However, as mentioned, if the HDD goes above 60 the warranty will be void. :-( (58C is the hottest it's hit so far, on a day I had to go out so the doors / windows were closed and no AC. However, room temp was only 30C, we get days hotter than that and I can't stay home forever, or leave the house open when I'm out. I'm in New Zealand BTW.) Cheers, -- Shaun. |

| Re: 4200 vs 5400 HDD I run a 7200 drive in my dell 600m and nothing is cooked, I never run it on my lap or a rug only on a smooth hard surface. I run it in an air condition office or my home and never outside when it is 90 degrees f. If you want more speed then a 7200 is the way to go.
