There is a discussion on eeeuser.com that seems to suggest that Celeron
processors tend to have high battery drain (14ma) when the laptop is
supposedly off. Thus some laptops tend to drain the laptop battery in a
week or less when they are powered off. Anybody ever heard of this with
Celeron processors before?

I also read a thread about some laptops with Celerons doesn't get placed
into S3 sleep correctly do to some hardware and/or software errors. I
don't know if this effects when the laptop is supposed to be off or not.
So could this be related? Anybody know anything about this?

This guy doesn't seem to think the 700 series eee (that's a Celeron
isn't it?) is too bad, but although he has lots of data I don't see
anything specific backing up his statement: "When off, there does not
seem to be a significant battery drain; "

Hi AJL! Wow this is great. I know two threads I would love to pass on
this information. Is it okay to let them know you found this? And yes,
the 700 series and the 900 use Celeron processors. Although oddly
enough, the vast majority are 900 users complaining about it. And I have
no idea why that is? Although actual battery drain when off would have
been nice. ;)

If my calculations are right 14ma would last approximately 314 hours
on a 4400 mAh battery, almost 2 weeks. That still doesn't sound like a
long time to me. And why would the Celeron be getting any current when
the laptop is off anyway? The only thing that really needs to be live
is the on off pushbutton sensing circuitry.

Yes you need the actual current from the battery to be exact. It
probably wouldn't be a difficult test once you got your battery or
laptop torn apart... 8O

That could be where your 14mA is going.

Well that sounds about right to me too. Some are claiming theirs is dead
in a week. It could be that their battery capacity has dropped down to
half or they have a higher drain current than some.

Well modern day electronics doesn't really turn off anymore. They sport
such features like wake on LAN, wake on alarm, etc.

I actually have lots of devices which drains the battery when off. Off
brand FM iPod transmitter (almost drains as much as on), Palm IIIc (flat
in two weeks), Gateway Celeron (flat in 3 weeks), Dodge Van (70ma drain,
dead in 10 weeks), etc.

I would think no since in the 'sleep' mode where RAM is kept alive
after shutdown, many EeePC users report less than a 24 hour battery
life. That would indicate to me that a lot more than 14ma is used by
the RAM when active. But I'm open to rebuttal...

That Wiki page you listed stated that standby the draw was 250ma to
270ma. And 4400mah ÷ 260ma equals to 16.92 hours. So it looks like you
are right on the mark AJL. :)
