Switching hard drive? ? ?

I have an HP Pavilion dv6119us laptop which seems to be going bad. It's
among the last that came with Windows XP, which I prefer to Vista.

The hard drive is all right.

If I get a similar laptop in slightly later model, such as a dv6280us, and
put the old hard drive in the new one, will it work? That way, I could avoid
having to transfer all my files, and also avoid Vista.

And I'd have another hard drive as a backup when the running one fails.

Re: Switching hard drive? ? ?

If the processor, chipset, video, sound and LAN are all the same, it
will probably work. Otherwise, it gets iffy to an extent that depends
on how different things are. There are no guarantees, and no matter
what you MIGHT have to "reactivate" (XP), which you MIGHT not be able to
do. As I said ... there are no guarantees, you just have to try it.

I am not as pessimistic as Barry, I believe you have a fair chance. Well
worth trying and at worst, you will have to install a fresh version of
XP. There are many ways to do that.
