I purchased a used Gateway Laptop and the original driver CD but the
driver for the ethernet (RG45) controller is nowhere to be found. I
have commuicated with both Gateway and MPG, and everyone is nice and
polite, and point me to all kinds of websties and downloads, but NO
ETHERNET driver! I downloaded INTEL's chipset driver and no luck
there either.

Could it be that GATEWAY never did actually provide a driver for the
ehternet controller? What a bumer!

If anyone has a Gateway laptop 450RGH and you can use your ethernet
connector (usually for a DSL connection), please look in your system/
device manager/hardware and see what driver you have?

I'll appreciate any advice I get. Too bad Gateway doesn't support
their last year's models. This is a pretty good laptop except for not
being able to get onto the internet.

Only you know what kind of network card is installed in your machine.
If you don't then you will have to try all of them one at a time.

I have ordered the trendnet USB-to-RJ45 adapter from newegg, but, it
is still unnerving that I cannot find the drivers for the ethernet
controller for this laptop. It also says that the network controller
is not installed. I tried each of the entries in the list you
referenced (I had already tried each of these earlier), and, after
each one, it still gives me that "new hardware found" for both the
ethernet controller and the network controller, but, it cannot find
the drivers and enters them as "other" with the big yellow exclamation
point.

I have no way of determining what physical ethernet controller, nor
what physical network controller, is on the inside - there is no
indication anywhere to tell me that. I used the chip_detector from
INTEL and it says that I have the 855PM chipset, and, I installed
their latest driver for that chipset, but, still no drivers for the
ehternet/network controllers.

Under system/hardware/device manager/network is only gives me the
1394 controller, which is properly installed.

I am wondering whether or not Gateway ever provided drivers for the
ethernet/network controllers for this model, even when they were new.
One would think that Gateway wouldn't throw them away, if they ever
had provided them in the first place. All my emails and phone calls
to them yield the same response - that I should go back and repeat
everything I have already done (twice, now). Nobody over there can
come out and make the absolute claim that they are SURE that such
drivers ever existed at all.

Again, if anyone has this model of laptop and can actually see that
the ethernet/network controllers are truly installed (under NETWORK,
not "other"), please check and see what driver you have and, if you
know, where did you get it.

I am hopeful that the USB-RJ45 adaptor will do the trick - it is a
work-around but speaks very poorly of Gateway to not have drivers for
hardware they put in their machines. They did put SOME KIND of
ethernet/network controller in there, bcause XP PRO keeps finding them
on bootup and keeps asking me to tell it where the drivers are - blast!

one other thing, since you order an adapter you should remove any
drivers that you installed if you can. the adapter should work. One other
thought
I had was that the either the onboard adapter was bad or one was not
install.
Check the bios and disable the onboard NIC.

To my suprise, I got another email from MPC (they took over Gateway
support) and I noticed that I had overlooked an earlier email that had
some drivers I hadn't yet tried. Lo and behold, ONE of those drivers
(INTEL PRO/1000) did in fact remove the "ethernet controller" not
installed icon and lead me to believe that my RJ45 connector would be
up and running. But I still had the big yellow exclamation mark next
to "network controller" under "OTHER", so, I was confused. As it
turns out, I have a couple of desktop PC's connected to each other
(and the internet) via an RJ45 Router, so I plugged this laptop into
the router using a spare RJ45 cable. VOILA! I was able to see my
desktop shared drives on this laptop, which must mean that the RJ45
connector for the laptop is working and that this driver was correct.
I haven't installed an internet connection for this Laptop yet, but I
will and all I can say is that I am very confused. Why am I still
getting that "network controller" icon? Of course, I go ahead and
uninstall it (from device manager), but, when I reboot, it comes back
and wants me to tell it where the driver for the "network controller"
is at, and then it fails and gives me the big yellow icon under

it's failure to be installed doesn't interfere with the proper working
of the RJ45 connector.

specs for this laptop did say that it had wireless capabilities - I
wonder????? I'll keep looking for more drivers and maybe it will also
get cleared up, but, for now, at least I have my RJ45 connector up and

Googling the specs shows it has a Firewire (1394) port. That is
treated as a network connection by XP and could be what is missing the
driver.

You are making this too difficult. Find out what CHIP is present
(probably shows up in Device Manager (usually, even without drivers
installed), or check the specs, or physically open the access panel (if
it's a mini-PCI slot on the bottom of the laptop). Then find drivers
for that chip from the chip mfgr.

You may have two "Ethernet Controllers" .... a wired one for the RJ-45
cable socket, and a wireless WiFi one.
