| How do I reset the Mobo password on a HP n600c laptop? I just got an old N600C that has an unknown password that prevents me from getting into the CMOS setup. How do I reset it? I want to put in a new, larger disk. If I can't get into CMOS, will it still autoconfig the new disk? | Re: How do I reset the Mobo password on a HP n600c laptop? It will probably accept the disk without going into CMOS at all. Resetting the password is supposed to be a secret, and often even if we know (in this case I don't) we won't tell you because you may be a thief trying to get into a stolen laptop. Every laptop is potentially different. For example, on Toshiba laptops (where I generally do know how to reset the passwords), there are about a dozen different ways of doing it and it gets very model-specific. It doesn't hurt to ask. Were I to bring it into an authorized HP service shop with my HP proof of purchase, can a technician reset the MOBO password for me for a few bucks? -- Al Dykes News is something someone wants to suppress, everything else is advertising. - Lord Northcliffe, publisher of the Daily Mail |

Re: "Were I to bring it into an authorized HP service shop with my HP proof of purchase, can a technician reset the MOBO password for me for a few bucks?" Hard to say. Toshiba has different "levels" of repair centers. The higher levels can reset a password (in all cases), the lower levels can't [I don't know about HP; but there is a way to get it reset, even if it means shipping the laptop to a "factory" center]. That leaves charges, and depending on the circumstances, could be anything from free to $100 or more. To get an absolutely specific answer, instead of asking a newsgroup, ask HP.
