| using a lap top with the lid closed Hi all, I have a Dell Inspiron Laptop 2650 that I primarily use for GPS navigation. Sometimes I don't need to use the screen and would like to be able to close it but still keep recording the trip data. Is there any way that I can rig the laptop so that it will still function without the top being open and still record the data I need to record. Then when the time does come that I need to use the screen all I have to do is open it? I'll help would be appreciated .. Albert |

I must be a little dance because I can't understand why if I close the lid on the laptop it would raise the temperature of the components inside the computer. The cooling fan pulls air through side vents in the front bottom part of the housing and discharges it not the bottom at the back of the unit. Unless you're talking about having the screen in contact with the computer while it's running? Am going to bed! And check the answers tomorrow. Thank you .. Albert |

And touching the top/keyboard of the case after it has been on for some hours, will tell you the amount of heat that tries to escape. The area above the harddisk is quite hot in a lot of laptops. So dont trust the fan only. The battery is another item that does not like additional heat. It ages rapidly when overheated. |

| Re: using a lap top with the lid closed In power settings you should be able to set what action occurs when the top is closed - set it to None. Set your display to turn off after short interval. Be sure the laptop is sitting on a hard flat surface so it gets some airspace underneat - anything you can do to furhter lift it may help. If using vista, consider setting the CPU power when on battery to a low percentage to help with the heat problem mentioned by Sjouke. I had a laptop which I used to use at work - with external monitor, keyboard, mouse etc. - and that sat under the monitor stand with its lid closed, and happily ran all day with no problems whatsoever. -- Cheers, Roger ______ Email address maintained for newsgroup use only, and not regularly monitored.. Some are designed to operate closed (especially those that mate with a docking station). Some are just able to do so. Others generate sufficient heat to damage the LCD display. |

Just what I needed to hear. In an RV newsgroup someone posted the fact that he was passing through Nashville about three o'clock in the morning in his motorhome. The police stopped him for what they said was speeding. Long story short they forced him to open the safe which contained a handgun which they confiscated and while the second officer held him outside the other one search the motorhome and found his stash of about $3000 travel cash. He immediately found an RV park and that morning went to the judge with his laptop which had been recording his trip and showed the judge he was not speeding. The judge said he couldn't do anything about the $3000 because there was no proof that it existed but he dismissed all charges and returned his handgun Awhile back I was stopped and given a warning ticket for speeding and if I'd have had my GPS on I could've demonstrated to him that I was not speeding. As far as the surface that the laptop is going to be on you can check it out here. http://www.advantas.net/lason/Laptop.html And as far as temperature is concerned, if it's a hot day I will have the AC on for sure. (G) From the picture you can see that the air conditioner vent will blow on the computer. I appreciate everyone's input. .. Albert |

Since 99% of laptops are manufactured by China, Inc., 99% of laptops have a minimal CPU heat pipe cooling system. Q Q |

If so , I'm sure a google search would find one that works off 12v also. |
