Did anyone score one of the sub-$300 laptops this morning? If so,
what did you end up with, and how do you think it's going to work out
for you? I thought about maybe trying for one available locally (a
dual-core Compaq offered by Nebraska Furniture Mart), but since I
broke down and got myself a MacBook Pro this summer, I've pretty much
sworn off any new computers for the next five years (I hope). Also, I
want to be sure of 64-bit compatibility for as much future-proofing as
possible, so I was intrigued by the ~$450 Hewlett Packard Athlon 64 at
Best Buy. If my ratty old Averatec backup machine hadn't stubbornly
refused to cooperate by continuing to work, I might have been able to
talk myself into replacing it-you know, just in case.

Oh, my goodness-MSNBC just flashed a picture of what it looked like
outside Nebraska Furniture Mart here. Now I'm *glad* I missed it.
