Toshiba Satellite A215-S4747, Brightness Controls in XP Issues

I recently bought a Toshiba laptop, dropped Vista and setup XP.
Everything is working fine except for the fact that I cannot decrease
the brightness of the screen using FN + F6. I've looked on Toshiba's
website for keyboard drivers but haven't found anything. I've searched
Google to see if anyone else has encountered this problem and haven't
found anything.

Any help would be appreciated.

It's not just Toshiba. My Samsung NC10 netbook brightness level has a
mind of its own, normally opening at minimum setting so you can't hardly
see the picture.

It seems once the low light setting manifests itself, it tends to be
very hard to override. Once overridden, it work fine for a few wakeups,
then reverts back to its "start me in the dark" setting.

The Fn + uparrow keys function, but only after WinXP as booted, so it
must be these utilities storing the wrong setting on close or
hibernation. I normally hibernate, not shutdown, the NC10. Hibernation
doesn't store the full brightness setting because when it comes out of
hibernation, it's dark again. Very frustrating.

If a man goes way out into the woods all alone and says something,
is it still wrong, even though no woman hears him?

There is an EeePC utility called eeectl that has both Linux and Windows
versions. It might work on other Intel machines too, I am not sure. But
it has an Ultra Bright mode that I have to wear sunglasses just to see
the screen. I only use the Windows version, not sure what you can do
with the Linux version.
