| Recommended Online Sources for Notebook Memory? I have an Inspiron 8200, and I want to upgrade the memory for it. (To be sure, I don't want to hear any of this you-need-to-buy-a-new-laptop heckling because If I had the money for a new laptop I wouldn't be posting this message.) I know the specs for the SODIMM's I need to buy, but I want to compare prices. I have two 512's in a saved shopping cart on Crucial but I'm trying to get some price comparisons, but from REPUTABLE dealers. I'm weary of pricewatch because i've been burned before by some of those sellers, and I don't take eBay seriously for computer products (again I've been burned before by several eBay sellers, but interstingly enough, ONLY on computer products). Are there any respectable online Memory sellers that anyone would recommend? I'm checking prices on Newegg as we speak, but it's been many many years since I've bought memory online and I can't remember my old sources. Thanks, all. | Re: Recommended Online Sources for Notebook Memory? I've bought from Crucial, and I've bought Crucial memory from Newegg. Satisfied both ways. The trick with Newegg is to find Crucial's generic part number for the item you need. When you use Crucial's Memory Selector, they use part numbers specific to the laptop brand/model. There may be many different part numbers for what is the same item. So, armed with Crucial's specs on the recommeded part, search Crucial for the generic item. That part number then can generally be found on Newegg or other vendors. For example, the recommended 1GB module for my Presario is CT612735 The equivalent "generic" part is CT12864X40B Both priced the same on Crucial.com The generic is about $10 less at Newegg. Sometimes Crucial offers free shipping on orders of some minimum size, Newegg also offers deals sometimes. Then I was at a local computer store, same exact part# for memory, was cheaper. Also I could easily return it if it didn't work. So check you local computer retail outlets, not a chain, but those that specialize in retail upgrades and OEM parts. Also check with the online stores for the re-stocking fee. samurai. |
