My Lifebook Doesn't Read All Cd Roms

Hello All,
My Lifebook can read all music CDs however does not read all data CDs.

Please, what settings do I need to look at to make it so that my CD ROM Drive reads all CDs?

Thank You in Advance.

Regards,
Allan

Maybe you can specify some more details which kind of CDs your drive fails
to read. Are these burnt CD-R or CD-RW? Or just plain data CDs? Do the CDs
have scratches or are they somehow dirty? Can the same CDs be read in other
computers/drives? Sometimes it helps to update the firmware of the CD
drive. Yet this might be difficult with a slimline laptop drive. Which CD
drive has your Lifebook built in? Or you have to clean the lense of the
drive itself. You can use a cotton swab and some alcohol for this.

Re: My Lifebook Doesn't Read All Cd Roms

Dear Andreas Schulze-Bäing,
Many thanks for your reply. The CDs that my computer can;t read, can be read on other computers.

The CDs aren't dirty or scratched. They are just ordinary burnt CD-Rs and CD-RWs.

My computer did read a set-up CD (from a stockmarket trading company) however, other similar CDs cannot be read.

I do mess around behind the scenes of my computer at times and I feel that I may have inadvertently made a setting that I shouldn't have made. I think this because my computer reads all music CDs.

Regards,
Allan

Well - some earlier CD drives had problems with burnt CDs. Have you always
had this problem on the lifebook? Or did it appear over time? Which model
is the laptop and the CD drive?

Normal non-burnt data CDs are usually less of a problem. Do you have
problems with burnt Audio CDs?

You can try starting a system from CD using
BartPE http://www.nu2.nu/pebuilder/
The Ultimate Boot CD
A CD based Linux http://www.knoppix.net/ http://www.ubuntu.com/
If any of these CDs does load, it's most likely a software/OS issue.
Maybe it helps to set the computer back to an earlier setup using system
restore in case you use Windows as an OS?

Hi Allan,

If your major problem is burnt CDRs & CDRWs, I would check
with the source. Unfortunately, there are still a lot of
people who don't know that you shouldn't packet-write CDs
that you plan to share.

Besides which, optical media are just horribly unreliable and
incompatible in general. Usually DVDs are the problem though, not CDs.
