Thinkpad A30: no battery-light, no charging

I have a Thinkpad A30, it works fine, but since a week the battery indicator
light stops blinking at all
and the battery wonīt charge anymore. Also no light when only on ac adapter.
Itīs now at 0% and I canīt use it because I canīt charge.
Everything else works ok.

I already tried:
- recalibration, nothing happened
- reinstall cmos battery, nothing happened
- another battery but still no battery indicator light :( this battery was
charged for 40% and will not charge either
- another ac adapter, no difference

Any ideas?

MC

Well, at this point, any fix will require opening up the laptop.

The maintinence manual is here.

Yes thanks, I read it about an hour ago, and opened up the laptop, replacing
the bits mentioned, but with no help....
It seems to me something is wrong with the (golden) connectionpoints where
the battery fits/connects in the laptop?

Do they look corroded? Or Loose?

No, they look perfectly normal

Unless you somehow got TWO bad batteries, i think the motherboard is
the cuplrit, by elimination.

You can check if you know someone who has a similar IBM laptop, and
see if either of your batteries will charge.

One of the batteries is not bad Iīm sure.
If itīs the motherboard shouldnīt there be other problems too? Is it just
the battery-connections on the motherboard which are fault then?

I had an A30 that had a very similar problem. Mine would "run" from
the battery as long as the battery was charged, but would not run via
the AC adapter/charger, and would not charge the battery. I took it to
a shop that specialized in laptops, and they told me I'd need to
replace the motherboard. Of course, there were no "used" MBs
available, and a new one would cost more than the computer was worth.
So I bought an IBM battery charger. Actually, it is an adapter that
has connectors that fit the battery, so you can charge the battery
"outside" of the computer. For power, the adapter uses your original
charger brick.

To see what I'm describing, look here:
http://review.zdnet.com/IBM_ThinkPad...l?tag=pl&q=IBM

Since that seemed to work fine, I bought a couple of spare batteries,
one that fit the CD drive slot, and the other a replacement for the
original large battery. I used it that way for about 6 months until I
got tired of the hassle, and bought a T40. I sold the A30 and all the
batteries to a student. He thought he could fix the MB, but I doubt if
he ever did.

Not necessiarily. A motherboard has lots of independant circuits. Many
integrated circiuts can fail without compromizing the whole unit.

> Is it just
> the battery-connections on the motherboard which are fault then?

Possibly, or it could be the logic chip that controls the charging, or
something in between. A skilled solderer might replace the battery
connection, or solder a wire across a burnt trace. But replacing a
surface mount IC is a whole other level of expertise. Not many people
have both the skills and equipment to do it. Most of those charge more
for services than the particular part is worth.

Thanks, I will look after my laptop by a specialist first, hear what he
says.
When he too suggest itīs the MB I will try (or buy) that IBM multiple
charger. Did not know it exists, itīs a good tip!
