For various laptop brands, I've seen "original" batteries sell
via conventional channels for $100 and more.

On eBay, the buy-it-now price for "compatible" batteries with
the same specifications is typically half or even a third, even
after factoring in shipping price.

I know anyone can write any spec, and can print CE on their
product whether or not it's been earned...

Do you know of any eBay sellers offering reliable, high
performance, low-cost batteries?
