How to check CMOS battery - Dell Inspiron 7000

How do I check the CMOS battery in my Dell Inspiron 7000 A400GT
laptop? I'm having problems with random freezing, which seems to be
related to having APM enabled, and someone suggested it may be the
CMOS batter. All tests pass on the Dell diagnostic disk.

Thanks

Re: How to check CMOS battery - Dell Inspiron 7000

The Inspiron 7000 is pretty old. I would guess that the CMOS battery is just
about dead after maybe 7 or 8 years. The Dell diagnostics do not test the CMOS
battery because it cannot be tested accurately. Replacing the CMOS battery may
require quite a bit of work to disassemble the computer to get at the battery.

Where it isn't even mentioned.

I don't have my inspiron 7500 handy, but as my fuzzy memory recalls, the
battery should be under the palmrest. The Dell exploded view does not
show a cmos battery, though the repair guide text talks about a NiMH
CMOS battery.

I have an old XPi with a bad cmos battery. If I leave in the main
battery, works fine. If I remove the main battery, have to reset the
clock every time it powers up. But it runs fine after that. If you
need something that's not default in the CMOS setup, you'd have to set
that too.

Now, for your problem...

Get yourself a copy of memtest86. Download the floppy or cd version
depending on your peripherals. Power it up, run cmos setup to make sure
it's not corrupt. Boot memtest86.
Let it run. It won't let the cpu rest, so it will get as hot as it
gets. Ditto for the memory.
Sometimes ram gets funky when it's hot.

Sometimes the processor heat sink works its way loose.
But I'd suspect the cpu fan first. The fan should run for a few seconds
when you press the power button. Also blow the dust out of the cooling
vents. Be careful about letting the fan speed up too fast while you're
blowing it out. I poke a toothpick into the fan blades to keep it from
turning then blast it with compressed air.
Reseating the ram sometimes helps.

If you decide to buy a CMOS battery, I'd not get a used one. EVERY used
dell NiMH CMOS battery I've bought used has been bad.
