Soon to be tablet PC user...

Hi there,

I'm a graphics artist and am looking for a suitable tablet PC which would provide me with the means to create--in 2d and 3d--artwork. I know that tablet PC technology is still in its infancy, but it has to be better than mouse- or graphics tablet-driven art rendering.

I would appreciate any input re: a suitable machine for my purposes. So far, I've been looking at the Acer 100Ti series in terms of all-around use and affordability.

Regards,

flanative27

Hello and welcome to the site.

Is screen size important to you?

You'd probably be interested in the newer slates. I know of a few people using the C100 series for graphics applications but they are slow relative to the newer slates. Graphics artists may want to use the slates such as the Motion M1400, HP TC1100, Electrovaya Scribbler so that the keyboards are not getting in the way and the processing power is great enough for you to not sit around all day waiting for the machine.

Talking Thanks!

Wow! That was fast.....thanks for the quick response AND recommendations for graphics applications w/tablet PC.

I will definitely continue my research for the ideal machine for my needs. You've given me a starting place for that research by suggesting the Motion M1400, HP TC1100, and Electrovaya Scribbler.

Regards,

Ron

Lora

I agree with Layne's suggestions.

One quick tip though: if you are looking for a unit with a display resolution greater than 1024x768 then you only have one option -- Toshiba Portege M200. It is a convertible and a little heavier than a slate because the keyboard is always attached, but offers SXGA+.

Wink Toshiba M200 series...

Thanks for your input, Lora. I had a chance to play with a Toshiba S810 at Best Buy last night, and immediately fell in love with the tablet PC concept, although I am not sure about the S810.

I haven't had the opportunity to try other machines, but am convinced that ANY tablet PC can "draw" circles around graphics tablets and--of course--the old mouse, insofar as being able to create computer images with the greatest degree of tactility and personal interaction.

I would appreciate any further info you would like to share re: tablet PC technology. I will definitely purchase one, once I decide on which would best suit my needs.

Regards,

Ron Wilder

I know the Toshiba M200 can work on an external monitor and utilize a wacom graphics tablet at the same time. Other TabletPC's may but don't have the native resolution of the M200. There is some great pressure sensitive software also available.

So many hardware choices. :) The good thing is that they're all decent. I don't think you'll consider any of the new models a mistake, though some certainly suit better uses than others.

Once you get past the hardware decision, the software will be important too. Take a look at the drawing apps made specifically for the Tablet PC, like Alias Sketchbook Pro.
