Introducing yet another tablet fanatic! Greetings! I stumbled acrossed this site while trying to devine information on a calibration problem and it seems like just the board I want to keep my eye on and be involved in so I thought I'd introduce myself. I've been a longtime fan of tablets and handhelds (although certainly not as long as others). I came into the scene with the Newton and Palm 1000 (and followed through avidly with almost every modem in the Palm series up to the Palm m505) and have had others come and go...A Cassiopeia, Velo 1, etc... Which brings me to where I am now...Having recently sold my last remaining shred of conventional laptop life (I loved my PCG-N505VE but it was time to move on) I have wholeheartedly embraced tablet life (it IS a lifestyle, isn't it? In my company is: A Palm m505 (my hip mounted companion without whom I'd be lost) A PenCentra 200 which sits quietly on my coffee table and is my primary device for web, word processing, recipes, research, skipping through message boards, etc (if only I could get to hotmail with it...) A Stylistic 1200 mounted removably in a little dinky Ford Festiva (You couldn't kill either a 1200 or a Festiva if you wanted to!) A Stylistic 3400 which has a permanent place in my satchel A Stylistic 3500 in it's dock on my desk for when I need something more than the PenCentra can manage (with it's 7 hour battery life and it's ability to do what I "need" while sitting around the house, the PenCentra deserves it's place, regardless of it's shortcomings in my opinion) My name is Wolfie and I'm a Tablaholic...

You have quite a list of equipment in your tech bag. We'd love to have you spend time on the board, snoop around, chime in, and maybe help out a few people.

Stylistic 3400/3500 Hey Wolfie! Love that parting line! I'm new here, too.... I've been watching & researching tablets for about a year now. Just today finally got my hands on a real live demo - with stylus attached (wonders never cease)! I think I'm in love!! Of course, my desires outstrip my budget... Please tell me more about the Stylistic 3400 & 3500. I read they are good for viewing outdoors? Are they upgradeable i.e. OS, hard drive? I am particularly interested in the handwriting option. And anything else you consider important... Thanks, roozter

Gladly, although I'm sure there are lots of opinions about lots of devices here. :) They are upgradable (standard laptop drives, 44 pin connector) and one memory slot each, standard SO-DIMMS if I recall. I'm running 98SE on the 3400 and XP Tablet on the 3500 and they're both excellent outdoors. If you've used a laptop with a bare LCD outdoors, you'll probably notice just a hint of something "not quite right" for the first few minutes until you adjust (owing, I believe, to the width of the touch panel which places the point of glare just a *tiny* bit above the actual surface of the LCD image. Fujitsu did a pretty good job with the surface of the touch panel and glare seems very minimal, almost unnoticable, particularly when compared to older devices where the space between the surface of the screen and the actual image is more pronounced. The PenCentra, for example, looks fabulous outdoors but the "glare point" is high enough above the image that a reflection can seem just slightly distracting. Almost all new devices have addressed this more than adequately though. Personally, I think the quality of the handwriting recognition is dependant on a number of factors, not the least of which being the effort you're willing to put into it. Platform and software are important but I find that much of the time it depends largely on how you write and taking the time to think about how you write. I "grew up" with a Palm and I find that I not only write faster in "grafiti", but that I will occasionally grafiti on paper as well (when I'm forced to use paper, that is...) I get along well with handwriting recognition. For high use, I'll still resort to a keyboard but 95 percent of the time handwriting works more than adequately for me with few errors. (certainly not enough that correction is a task) I'm babbling...I'm sorry. I'm in love with technology and Fujitsu is my friend. ;) |

[quote=Wolfie] That's the nature of an addiction. Just admitting that you are powerless against gadgets and that your life has become unmanagable is a step in the right direction though... I can relate...my quest for the perfect Tablet has become an obsession & taken over my life! Maybe we should start a 12-step... Thanks very much for the info, those sound great & there are alot of 3400s out there (yeah, Ebay!) but I want wireless, if possible. I live online - always on. A multi-national modem would be nice, too... Maybe I'll land one of those tc 1100s on ebay!

That certainly is one aspect which isn't "ideal" (although I'm not sure I'd go so far as to say it's a complaint...just not...ideal) is the wireless card sticking out the side or top of a device. My partner uses a Powerbook Ti (and is strongly attached to the conventional laptop form factor) which is fashionable enough, sure...has the internal wireless that I envy (although range is sadly lacking given the metal case it's encapsulated in) but at 250 pounds is not necessarily the portable option I need and unfortunately another tablet is financially out of the question right now, particularly when my biggest reason would be simply to not have the antenna sticking out the side. One day...*sniffle* If you end up with one of those TC1100's, let me know what you think of it, I haven't played with one myself.

I haven't actually played with one either - considering the sad state of Tablet demos around here. I just covet all the toys! The disadvantage being the HIGH cost of accessories for it. :bawling: And I need a bit more in my nest egg to make a top bid!

Speaking of meetups, I don't suppose you know of any groups in the Seattle area I can get in touch with? Maybe I should hop over to seattlewireless and dig around while I'm thinking about it, it might be nice to "window shop" as it were... ;)

Seattle wireless is a pretty nice online mobility resource (primarily if you are in the Seattle area, as you might have guessed. ;) ) I didn't get around to checking there for anything tablet related yet and while I did find info on a meetup group here a week or two ago, I haven't gotten any response and from what I can tell, they aren't doing much currently but I may be wrong. :santa:

Hey ! You seem to be a real stylistic fanatic... Maybe you could help finding how to program my "brand new" 3500 tablet. Where could I find the "Fujitsu Technical Reference Guide" or the developper kit for this tablet (I read that hotpad programming requires a specific DLL included in this kit...) ? Thank you !
