Tablet PCs for Animators?

Hi I'm new here, doh. Anyways I haven't purchase a Tablet PC yet but I will at on June 30th. The reason I'm interesting in one is for animation. I use Retas pro, and Macromedia Flash to animate.

I figured this would eliminate the whole (draw on paper, then scan and edit each piece of paper) concept. When you have over 2700 frames that can be very time consuming.

Only thing is I can't decide which one to buy; all of them have pro's and cons.

My choices so far:
-Toshiba M205
Best all around but I prefer slates

-Motion Computing M1400
Best screen and 180 viewing angle but only 1.1 ghz

-Acer TravelMate C300
14.1 screen and 1.5 ghz but it's not a slate

I like these 3 because they seem more like they were "Animator Ready"

Any suggestion would be nice
I can only buy 1 :bawling:

Glad to join.

What I'm looking for is:

A slate with
Pentium M 1.5-1.7 mhz
40-60gig 5400/7200 hard drive
512 mb ram/ 2gb max
400mhz bus
12.1 screen size
nVIDIA GeForce FX Go 5200 32M graphics card

Is there anything close?

Hi,

Welcome to the forums.

All three are excellent choices and you really can't go wrong with any of them. Now, I'm not aware of a 12" slate with an NVidia GeForce FX video card but someone else may correct me because it is 4:30 in the morning and my brain is a bit foggy. The HP TC1100 is a 10" with an NVidia graphics controller.

Actually, the only slate you mention is the Motion. The Motion uses the Intel 855 GME Extreme Graphics controller and it uses the ULV processor but please consider it because it is a very nice unit.

With regards to the performance, all three would be improved with more RAM than 512 MB. I'd suggest you worry less about the processor speed and add more RAM to the system you are planning to purchase.

Thanks, I kinda figured that too.
I like the motion m1400, I guess with more ram it could handle the animation
software without any lag.

The HP TC1100 is almost perfect to me however the 10" screen will not do for artist/animators. I Also like the HP TC1100 because you can view the screen at almost any angle without losing the value of the image and you can use it outdoors as well. Why couldn't they have made it a 12" screen instead? :realmad:

Thanks for responding and glad to join this forum:D

Are there any other graphic artist/digital animators here at the forums?
And if so, what tablet have you purchase and which one(s) do you recommend?

10" display size is fine for people taking notes, but you're right if you're drawing on scale then you'll want more screen realestate.

Keep in mind that resolution deals with fitting more on the screen at one time. XGA is 1024x768 and all the Tablet PCs are currently XGA except for Toshiba M200, which is SXGA+.

So when you have a 10" XGA and a 12" XGA display and compare the two, you will see the same content, but that content will just be a little larger on the 12" display relative to the 10".
