Can I have 3 monitors with my laptop?

I only recently realised that you can have two monitors with a laptop!
What a life saver: I just can't work with one screen!

Erm... I'm getting greedy: is there any chance of getting 3 screens!
I can't see why not.
Having multiple screens as far as I can see doesn't have any extra load
on the CPU.

Is there a splitting device for the monitor?
Or maybe a USB solution?

Thanks.

If there was such a thing as a splitter for a monitor cable, the 2nd monitor
would only display a mirror of the other. To learn more about multi monitor
support for laptops, take a look at this:

I ran an external monitor on my laptop for years - only way to fly! I
did have three monitors for a short time. I used a PCCARD video card
(can't remember the brand - it was a few years ago). It worked, but it
was a pain and Windows would often forget the monitor location and
collapse everything onto the laptop's monitor. There's also
limitations about video/movies/games on the non-primary screen.

Re: Can I have 3 monitors with my laptop?

You can have 10,000 monitors, with appropriate active splitters, but
they will all display exactly the same thing. But on a laptop, two is
the largest number of independent monitors that you can have, and you
can only have two on some laptops.

[You will need an active VGA splitter to drive larger numbers of
monitors. They are available, but they are kind of expensive. I've
seen models that will drive 8 or 16 monitors from a single VGA cable,
and you can daisy chain them. They are used in retail stores (Best Buy,
etc.) to drive the monitor displays from a single computer.]

One thing you might get working is a pcmcia video card.

Such as
http://sewelldirect.com/vtbookpcmciacard.asp

Never used one.

Windows 2k and xp limit you to 10 independent displays. (limit of the
control panel applet, which can be overcome)

Re: Can I have 3 monitors with my laptop?

Within the last year or so I recall there being an external device
advertised, that could give you two or more additional monitor connections,
that could be treated as separate displays (not all mirroring the same
view). It might have been a USB attached device. I can't seem to find it
now.

Not true.

The Matrox DualHeadToGo, and TripleHeadToGo devices will allow the
connection of 2 or 3 monitors, and present them to the computer as a
single widescreen device. If your video chipset will support the extended
resolution, you are good to go.

In theory, if your video chipset has enough horsepower, you could have up
to 4 displays (1 internal + 3 external).

All monitors must be the same resolution (up to 1280x1024 per display),
which is presented as a single 2560x1024 or 3840x1024 display.

http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/gx...dh2go/home.php
http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/gx...th2go/home.php

Matrox has a compatibility tool available for download which will check
your graphics card and driver version to confirm if it will work.

Re: Can I have 3 monitors with my laptop?

Well, a cardbus PC Card is the architectural equivalent of a PCI card,
so in theory a video card (potentially with dual outputs) could be
implemented as a PC Card, but I have not seen one.

Google turned up this one:
VillageTronic VTBook 32mb cardbus video card. supports up to 1920x1200.

http://www.smalldog.com/product/12652205

There were also a couple cards by Margi, but they were only 4mb,
and don't appear to be available anymore.

Found it! The card I had was the Appian Traveler. Here's a review of
it: http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/reviews/traveler/.

I had forgotten about this web site:
http://www.realtimesoft.com/multimon/
It's all about multiple monitors in PCs. You should definitely check
it out.

Re: Can I have 3 monitors with my laptop?

You may want to check out http://www.maxivista.com

They have a demo video at http://www.maxivista.com/demo.htm

It requires a 2nd PC but if you have two PCs then it is a really cool
"must have" software utility.
