Dual display on T43

Hello All

I have a T43 and my comppany just gave me a 19" external screen, which
I've attached to the analog output. The external screen prefers a 1280
x 1024 60Hz resolution. But I cannot set the T43 out to that.

If I click the second display on Control Panel/Display/Settings, I get
the display, which I can activate using a check in "Extend desktop to
external monitor)." I can set that second display to to 1280 x 1024.
But as soon as I hit "Apply," the second display on the settings box
grays out and the computer says it's not active. The external screen is
working, but only at 1024 by 768. Am I doing something wrong?

Thanks.

Regards,
Anthony Giorgianni

Re: Dual display on T43

I believe the problem is the "extend desktop to external monitor". What
other settings do you have? Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe
extending will force you to use the same res. on both screens (1024x768
since that is your laptop's max res). I would try another setting

No. The 'extend desktop to external monitor' makes the external monitor an
additional area of desktop - there should be a graphic representation of
where it actually is in relation (it can be dragged to wherever you want
it). It can (or should be able to be) set to whatever resolution you like
(subject to it handling it) independantly of the main desktop.

Re: Dual display on T43

I have several thinkpads including a T43, and the external monitor
resolution on all them allows 1280x1024. On the "display properties"
window, what does "display" say for the 2nd monitor? I can't remember
this mattering, but did you boot with the 2nd monitor attached? It
might help doing so. Are you using a docking station? What color
quality are you using? How much RAM does the graphics card have?

If you have the 2nd monitor set at 1024x768, does the monitor work?
Can you extend the desktop onto it and have it work?

Re: Dual display on T43

Thanks Everyone

I meant to post this thread in comp.sys.laptops.ThinkPad. But nice to see
you all provided answers anyone, even though I didn't properly identify it
as a ThinkPad.

Yes, I was confused with the extended desktop. That DOES extend the desktop
to two monitors, though the second one wasn't set up, which was the problem.
Turns out the answer was to use a ThinkPad utility - clicking on the
desktop, and there is a selection there to actually set up that second
monitor and also to tell the ThinkPad where to output the signal - laptop
monitor, external, both or extension (Fn-F7 works too and so does the
desktop properties dialog). I was able to set up the external monitor for
1280x and the ThinkPad monitor to 1024x there. Once I did that, I had
control, including the ability to run the monitors separately or as desktop
extensions - very cool, though running one as an extension plays havoc with
the toolbars I have docked to the top and sides of the screen. But I'm all
set now.

Thanks for the responses!!!!

Anthony Giorgianni
